Maungatapere School
A word from the Principal
Kia ora Parents and Whanau
The weather has impacted many events over the last couple of weeks. We managed to hold our Y4-8 athletic sports, squeezed in between the rain, but fortunately the grounds were reasonable firm. Junior athletics had to be postponed and the interschool Y7/8 athletics has been cancelled as a result of further rain!
We hope the weather improves for the many activities that are planned over the next few weeks.
Welcome to our new pupil who has joined us in the last two weeks: Ryan Justin
Congratulations to the following students who have received school awards for their achievement and attitude especially in relation to our school values:
Liam Fitzpatrick Rm 1 - For working hard in all areas of literacy.
Georgie King Rm 7 - Outstanding effort in all she does, constantly striving to be the best she can be.
Imogen Bennett Rm 8 - Solid effort and improvement in maths results.
Xavier Kuindersma Rm 8 - Solid effort and improvement in maths results.
Charlie Noakes Rm 5 - Outstanding commitment to always try your best .
Isi McGrath Rm 14 - Outstanding improvement in basic facts.
Sano Saekiew Rm 12 - For having a fantastic start to school.
Kapa Haka Performances:
Well done on the great performance many family and whanau experienced at the Mangakahia Cultural Festival. The support they received was excellent and they can be proud of the results. Thank you to those families that supported the Armistice Day service at Maungatapere Memorial Church. Our students who attended did a great job with their waiata and participation in the service. Special thanks to Nicole Ruddell and Chloe Cliff for reading the Ode and the names from the honours board. The local community attendees appreciated the school’s input. Thanks also to our Kapa haka Teacher Kim Neumann for her organisation, attendance and support for these events.
Athletic Sports:
Our Y4-8 school athletics sports was fortunately held between the wetter weather. It was good to see all students involved and giving their best to compete against their peers in the range of athletics events. It is always about our students doing their best in all events and challenging themselves. Students selected for the interschool event needed to compete with other students in local schools. This was done through the timing and measurement of events. This year the interschool sports has been limited to Y5/6 and Y7/8 only as numbers are getting too high to manage. Unfortunately, the weather has caused the Y7/8 event to be cancelled with no postponement date. Hopefully the Y5/6 event next week will go ahead.
Our Junior Athletics was also postponed and we are hoping to hold this on Wednesday 7 December.
Market Day Friday 2 December:
As part of our topic this term, students have been learning about creating a product, marketing, budgeting and selling. A notice has gone home with items for sale, approximate costings of items and the purchase process. We will be using a ticket system to avoid the need for numerous floats etc., so it will be a cash only market. Parents, whanau will be able to purchase tickets on the day. The market will run from 1.15pm until about 2.15pm or when items are all sold out!
Reports and 2023 Classes:
Friday 16 December is our final school day, with the following Monday Prize Giving. On Friday students will visit their classes for next year and meet their new teacher and classmates. For some students this may create a little anxiety, but please work through this with your child in a positive supportive way. We do consider placement very carefully and once they are settled into their new room they are generally fine. End of year reports will also be sent home in an envelope on Friday. Unfortunately, the way the term falls this year we are holding prize giving on Monday after the weekend, as we are required to be open for a set number of days

Swimming:
We are planning to start swimming next week. Swimming is an essential skill in the north where we are surrounded by water and is also part of our school curriculum. All students are expected to participate unless they have a note from their parents. Please make sure students have named togs, towel and cap in a named swimming bag. These do tend to get left behind and being named allows a quick return! The pool will be heated, so is not cold (25°) for students. While classes may not be swimming every day, there are lunchtime swims on some days also – so they can bring togs every day.
Community Use of the School Pool & Grounds:
The Board of Trustees does open the pool to the community over the summer, to enable our school families that do not have access to a pool a chance to swim. Keys are available to school families only, provided they have paid their school donations. The fee is $60, including a $10 key bond. There are rules and guidelines for use and parents have to sign an agreement and collect the key. Keys will be available until Friday 16 December with community use from Monday 19 December after prize giving.
Colour Run Fundraiser:
Information has been shared regarding the Colour Run fundraiser we are doing again this year to support EOTC costs for events during the next year. While this is done through a provider we do get 90% of the profit back to our school. Students have already received rewards for registering and once this is done, the rest is easy with it being shared via social media. Congratulations to Hazel Angus for receiving a major spot prize yesterday at assembly. Several other students also received minor spot prizes. We have already raised over $3000 – well done to our school community!
BOT meeting:
Next meeting is Wednesday 7th December 7pm.
Reminders/End of Year Activities:
Year 8 Graduation Dinner: Wednesday 14 December. Please return the attendance form that has been sent home with the information.
Whole School Disco: All students are able to attend this on Friday 16 December 5.30-7pm. The theme is ‘Red Carpet’ so students can get dressed up and come along to enjoy some games and dance time. Sausages, pizza, drinks and ice blocks will be sold by the PTA and entry is a gold coin donation. The school council will organise the games and decorations.
End of Year Activities: All classes are participating in an end of year EOTC activity. Y0-2 are having a beach day on Thursday 8 December, our Y3/4 classes are participating in the Experiencing Marine Reserves programme on Wednesday 14 December. Y7/8 are visiting the Town Basin new playground and the pool on Tuesday 6 December. Y5/6 are in the process of finalising their activity date. All classes will send home information confirming dates, times and support needed via Seesaw, newsletter and the school App.
Library Books: The library is closing at the end of this week. Please return any library books you have at home so that a stock take can be done. Students will be able to use the library at school but not take books out.
Summer Reading Programme: Each year we have provided some students with a range of books to help maintain their reading over the summer break. Those students offered the programme will receive a bag of books to take home and read with the support of family and whanau. If your child has brought home information about this, we encourage you to participate and read with your children over the summer break.
To avoid students’ reading sliding back over the holiday it is important for them to continue reading – use the Whangarei Library, give books as gifts, read together as a family (recipes, comics, instructions, newspapers etc). Write and read diaries about trips, postcards, emails, captions for photos. These all help your children to maintain their reading and writing skills in the early years. It is also important for older students to keep reading and a regular family reading time where everyone is reading (books, magazines, comics etc) is a great way to do this.
Work from Room 3
Congratulations
Addie Wood and Dilan Brown shared their winning speeches with the Mangakahia Lion’s Club members on Tuesday evening. They can be very proud of their efforts, especially with the term break happening between their presentations. The club members were very impressed with the quality and presentation of their
speeches.
