The Spartan Standard
Creating Coherent Systems to Promote Learning for All
SUMMER EDITION
Happy Summer! I hope you are having a great break even though it is fast coming to a close. Here are some pictures of goings-on around school while you have been resting...and some news you can use...
Farewell to the 1300's
Preparing for Transport
Classrooms were placed on wooden stilts after all power and water lines were disconnected from each classroom.
Extra Wide Cargo
The classrooms were loaded on trucks with extra wide beds and lined up on K Street.
Empty Space
This is the space left after the first half of the 1300's were removed. Kudos to Garry Cabogason, Lou Rojas, and all the custodial staff for their help in ensuring the classrooms were empty.
Painting Facelift--Sparta's "New Look"
Unifying Spartan Blue
No more variations of Spartan Blue...
Clean Lines
Spartan Blue has been used to accent buildings.
A Lightness of Being
The Spartan Blue wainscoat has been replaced by a light color which gives our buildings a more updated look.
New Marquee Coming in August!
The old marquee that "died" late last year has been taken down and the base demolished to make way for a new one. A new marquee and the installation will cost approximately $35,000. Fortunately, the Chula Vista High School Foundation, under the leadership of Gary Chapman, has raised most of the money to be able to donate an electronic marquee that will be placed on the corner of 4th and K. They still need another $5,000.00 to cover installation fees. I know that many of you have been very generous in the past and I know of at least one teacher who has contributed a substantial amount of money towards purchasing the marquee. I am now appealing to all of you to make a tax-deductible donation of any amount to the foundation to help make the goal of totally paying for the marquee and installation. Every little bit helps. And I really believe that we can get this done by pooling our resources. I will happily accept your donation so I can acknowledge it with a letter for tax purposes. Please make checks payable to "CVHS Foundation".

Summer Bridge Art Program
Michelle Spielman and Suriya Stewart held a one week Summer Bridge Art program that honed the skills of students. Both teachers spent quality time to mentor students to become better artists. They both worked very hard to make this happen for our students. Thank you and kudos to you both!
Summer Bridge and Summer Math Bridge Programs
Under the leadership of Becky Bravo and with assistance from Marisol Higareda, we sponsored not one, but TWO Summer Bridge programs over the break. The first Summer Bridge Program, conducted June 23-27 for about 100 students, gave incoming 9th grade students a preview of Math, Science, English, and the Spartan Values. The second Summer Bridge Program that starts today, July 14, for more than 100 students, aims to strengthen math skills in preparation for Integrated Math. I would like to thank all teachers and staff involved in these Bridge programs for taking the time to give our students a leg up for this coming school year: Patrick Mallory, Dalia Jaime, Marisa Aguilar, Trevor Neeb, Andres Bautista, Maritza Villegas, Humberto Amador, Ramon Rios, Osvaldo Banuelos, Elsa Banuelos, Jenne Fredrickson, and Julia Rios.
District Summer Fine Arts Camp
Congratulations to Patrick Doerr for his leadership in coordinating the District Fine Arts Camp. Also involved were Debbie Nevin (Jazz Band) and Valerie Ingram (Dance). The district camp culminated in performances and a display of Art work held at our very own Performing Arts Center. Aside from our awesome staff, we were very well represented by our students. Kudos!
For The Common Good
- Technology Update: All teachers have received new desktops. Hurray!
- iPad Deployment: Our 9th graders will be receiving iPads on the first day of school. Alain Garnica-Mendoza will be revealing the great big deployment plan during the pre-service days.
- Master Schedule Update: We are in the thick of registering and clearing students at this point. Counselors are also busy making changes and balancing as a result of summer school. We have had changes over the summer and those affected have been informed. By Monday, July 21, I will E-mail the master schedule to all staff. I will also E-mail staff of any available 1/6's, if there will be any.
- Pre-Service Days: All certificated staff (teachers, counselors, nurse) will report for pre-service days on Monday, July 21, 2014 and Tuesday, July 22, 2014. A catered breakfast will be served on both days and will be available starting at 7:00 AM. All activities will PROMPTLY BEGIN at 8:00 AM and should end by 11:00 AM each day. The rest of the duty day, until 2:45, will be for lunch (30 minutes) and activities that certificated staff see fit to prepare for the schoolyear. I will be mailing a letter to all staff with more details of the pre-school days. I can't wait to see you all!
