Principal's Message
What a treat to have all of the ISB bands perform for families on Thursday night! It feels so good to continue to open the building and welcome parents back for events. I think we have turned a corner with the pandemic. We have also turned the corner with the school year. It is hard to believe that Outdoor School, daylight savings, and spring break are all just a few short weeks away - all things that signify the arrival of spring for me. I am a runner, and in a recent outing through the trails of Silver Falls State Park I came across both Indian Plum and Wild Mustard in bloom. I also noticed the sun was already up when I arrived at school yesterday - and I was on time.
Lots of ISB events coming up, some big and some small, so take the time to read through the newsletter below. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Culture Week Recap
Culture Week was a huge success with guest speakers, activities in advisory, a culture carnival, and of course a parade of flags from across the world. Here is a longer video of the “Parade of Nations.” Warning: the editing is not great, and you can’t hear the music being piped through the school PA system, but you can get a sense of the excitement of it. You can see some individual photos from this on the ISB Webpage. Here is a copy of the principal’s opening remarks. Below are two images from the guest speakers Zooming with advisory classes. Pulitzer Prize winning journalists Nick Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn joined us on Tuesday, and internationally renowned storyteller Alton Chung spoke to students on Wednesday.
ISB Personal Project Video
We have an amazing new video on our webpage made by 10th grader Logan McClure as part of his MYP Personal Project. The video does an excellent job encapsulating what ISB is all about. You can view it on our web page here, or directly on YouTube here.

Culture Corner
Oruro Carnival (Bolivia) - February 19 - March 1, 2022
Once a year, a small mining town in Bolivia comes alive with color, dance, music and celebrations for Bolivia’s largest annual cultural festival called Oruro. UNESCO declared this festival as one of mankind’s masterpieces! Though it is today a Christian celebration, the origins are pre-Colombian.
The festival’s centerpiece is La Diablada, the ‘Dance of the Devils’, an extraordinary parade that showcases demonic dancers in extravagant costumes that takes place on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. The parade is so long with thousands of dancers and musicians that it lasts up to 20 hours.
There are also Inca characters and Conquistadores in the parade. At the end, a symbolic archangel and devil engage in dances that tell the story of the ultimate battle between good and evil. Afterwards, a mass is held to announce that good prevails. The carnival ends on the Monday after Ash Wednesday with the Dia del Agua – ‘the Day of Water’ which is a huge water-bomb fight!
