Black History Month
For Black History Month, students researched and reported on Black inventors. Some of the famous pioneers included:
- Augustus Jackson: "Father of Ice Cream"
- Madam CJ Walker: Inventor of hair care products, entrepreneur, activist, and first female self-made millionaire
- John Love: Inventor of the pencil sharpener.
- George W. Carver: "Father of Peanuts"
- Frederick McKinley: He had 65 patented inventions, most famously refrigeration trucks.
- Joseph Dickenson: Invented an improvement that allowed a piano to start playing at any position on the music roll.
Fairness Tower Building Activity
Students did a team-building activity in small groups to evaluate a scenario in which they had to apply theories of fairness. Each group was handed a bag of materials and together had to build a free-standing tower with the materials they were given in 20 minutes. The team with the tallest most durable tower won. When the project concluded the students reflected on the following:
- How successful was your group?
- Were all groups operating under the same rules?
- Did you have the same supplies? Were all groups treated fairly?
- How did your group handle themselves? Were they respectful and caring of people and their ideas?
- Based on this experience, what are some fairness ‘don’ts?’ and fairness ‘do’s?’
- Even if everything is done fairly, some will still believe the solution to be unfair. Why is this the case?
- How can we use these do’s in everyday life as a student?
