Facilities Update
Our Buildings & Grounds Director met with the restoration company this week and in discussing more details with the insurance company, there are a few update to share.
- Abatement and air clearance is complete and has been cleared for all areas.
- Due to the amount of damage and abatement needs, the district will work with an architect and engineers to create plans and bring the spaces up to code. This is a large undertaking and involves permits and code compliance, which in turn takes time.
- The district will be adding a sink and running water near the gym so hot lunch can resume and be planned long term for the gym space.
- The following areas - cafeteria, Spanish room, art room, and 2 damaged classrooms will be closed long term.
Not the news we wanted to hear about these spaces, especially the cafeteria as it is another large gathering space for events and limits the PE to half the gym. Good news, the artwork that was created in the fall with the Artist-in-Residence has not been damaged. Unfortunately, some of the student artwork for the upcoming art show is still not accessible, which is preventing Washington from contributing a great deal to this particular show. There are quite a few upcoming events to close out our school year, but we will be as creative as we need to be to prevent any further cancellations of events.

Science & Engineering Day - Grades 3-5th
On Thursday, May 4th we are welcoming the Longfellow Middle School STEM students for our first Science & Engineering Day. The purpose behind this day is to celebrate science and engineering (STEM), support 21st century thinking, build connections across schools, and have students participate in student created design challenges. In the future, we hope to include all grades, but just our 3rd through 5th graders will participate this year. More information to come!
