GT Travels to Austin/San Antonio
Woods Intermediate and Wills Point Middle School Gifted and Talented students traveled to Austin and San Antonio for their Annual GT Trip. Students, staff, and parents loaded a charter bus at 5:30am to begin the journey. During the day in Austin, students were able to tour the Capitol and meet our State Representative, Dan Flynn. They visited the Texas State Cemetery (visiting the gravesites of Chris Kyle, Tom Landry, Ann Richards, and other notable Texans), then enjoyed dinner in Historic Gruene, Texas at The Gristmill before finally arriving in San Antonio. On the second day of their adventure, the group toured the Alamo, watched the IMAX movie about the Alamo, took a riverboat tour of the Riverwalk, and finished the evening at The Marketplace, eating dinner at Mi Tierra and enjoying the culture of San Antonio. Finally, the entire group enjoyed a full day at Sea World.

Pennies for Patients @ Wills Point Middle School
Students give back
The Wills Point Middle School participated in the Pennies for Patients program run by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society during the month of February. We started off with a kick-off so that students could be aware of the illnesses that they would be raising money to help fight. They were introduced to kids their own age who were battling these illnesses. WP Middle schools students rose to the occasion and raised $3,706.89 total to donate directly to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Many classes were competing for the number one spot. Two classes were able to reach gold level status by raising over $300 each. Mrs. Marical's class raised $1,285.77 and Mrs. Childress' class raised $348.91.
Foundation Gala
Boots, Buckles, and Bling
The First Annual Education Foundation was held on Friday, March 22 at The Establishment Barn in Able Springs. The Foundation Board worked with multiple donors to secure door prizes, auction items, entertainment, and catering. Several board members donated their time and talents to make the night come together. We hope that all who attended had a fabulous time and enjoyed the evening, which had one goal: GIVE BACK TO OUR STUDENTS AND TEACHERS! Over $40,000 raised in ONE NIGHT! A final total will come later this week. If you are interested in applying to join the Education Foundation Board, please contact Debbie Deen at debbiekdeen@gmail.com or melanie.mullin@wpisd.com.

Legislative Update from Dr. Caloss
from Austin
With the legislative session a little over halfway complete, things are starting to pick up. One of the hottest topics has been funding for public education. It has been the general consensus that the state needs to provide more funding for public school in our state. The challenge is what that will look like. The senate has passed SB 3, which would establish a new Classroom Teacher Salary Allotment to provide a $5,000 annual salary increase for every classroom teacher and they have now added librarians. SB 3 now goes to the house and will have to be passed by the house. In the meantime, the house is working on their own public education finance bill. HB 3 would add over $6 billion in additional funding for public education. If this bill passes through the House, it too would have to be passed by the senate before coming law. The current public school finance system is broken. Funding formulas are still being used that were developed 30-40 years ago. These formulas are outdated and HB 3 addresses this concern by updating some of the funding formulas. Keep a close eye on the legislative session over the next few weeks and contact our local legislators in support of more funding for the students of Wills Point.

Junior High Hosts Career Day
Bigger and Better!
Wills Point Junior High hosted their 6th annual Career Day on Friday, March 8th. This was an exciting day where guests from our community and all around came to share their awesome and unique job descriptions with students. We had all types of employment represented from mechanics, local chiropractor, business owners, video game designer, cosmetology, medical law enforcement, KLTV Meteorologist, and TVEC presented electrical safety to students. Several emergency vehicles and emergency helicopters arrived for students to explore and talk with emergency personnel during the afternoon. We look forward to our 7th annual Career Day in the future. We would love to have district employees present next year.
