Update to Exam Exemptions for the 2022 - 2023 SY (Per the Student Code of Conduct):
Academic Final Exam Exemption:
Each semester, as a reward for academic excellence, a student may choose to exempt up to three final exams (if the student is enrolled in seven classes at the home school) or two final exams (if the student is enrolled in six or fewer classes at the homeschool) provided the student has a grade of 95 or higher in the selected course(s).
Attendance Exam Exemption(Change from the previous school year):
Each semester, as a reward for exemplary attendance, students may exempt one final exam provided the student has five or less unexcused attendance transactions (including tardy to school) that semester and has a grade of 70 or above in the class he/she
wants to exempt.
Senior Final Exam Exemption (SECOND SEMESTER ONLY)
A high school senior who will be graduating at the end of the second semester may exempt the final exam in any course(s) provided the senior has a grade of 80 or higher in that course. A senior may use the Attendance Final Exam Exemption in lieu of the Senior Final Exam Exemption if the student chooses.
For all final exam exemptions:
- If a student qualifies for both general and academic final exam exemptions, the student must choose only one type of
- exemption (academic or attendance). A student may not combine the two types of exemptions.
- A student may not exempt the first or second semester final exams for courses with an End of Course
- Milestones assessment, AP courses, and IB courses.
- Final exams in dual enrollment courses are under the jurisdiction of the post-secondary institution. FCPS final exam exemption
- procedures do not apply to dual enrollment courses.
9th Grade Tiger Academy
We are almost half way through the first semester of your students' first year of high school! For some it has been a wonderful experience so far. Others are finding themselves struggling. That's ok! This is a time of transition and what worked in middle school might not work here on Tiger Trail. When students speak with me about academic frustrations, I tell them that if what they have been doing isn't working, they need to make a new plan. Here are some tips about what to include in your students' NEW plan in order to be successful:
- Seek out support. All of our teachers offer extra help sessions. Here is a link to our FCHS Tutorial Schedule that includes the days and times each teacher is available. When you open the spreadsheet, the subject categories are tabbed across the bottom to help you find your student's teacher easily.
- Look at your student's schedule for the week on Sunday before the week gets away from you. Decide with them when they will study, attend extra help sessions, attend after school events, etc. and create a weekly calendar. They can use their school Google calendar, the calendar on their cell phone, or you might even use a free shared family calendar like Cozi (they have an app too!).
- Dangle a carrot! We all need to feel rewarded for our hard work. Set up goals and rewards for your student. The rewards don't have to cost a thing. For example, when your student finishes their math homework, they get to watch their favorite show for 20 minutes, play on their phone, or have their favorite dessert. This helps break large overwhelming amounts of work into easier chunks with a reward at the end.
- Keep the End Goal in Sight. It's important for our 9th grade students to remember that all their classes count! Talk with your student about their graduation requirements. It's good for them to know the plan and keep their eyes on the prize...A High School Diploma!
