Teacher Appreciation Week
High School Volunteers
Students in the AP Language and Composition Class consistently are challenged by their teachers to change the world. This month, Belle McNamara, Elizabeth King and Alyssa Valentine are working on a Save The World Project. The group is collecting school supplies for the Girls and Boys Club of Worcester. They are hoping to get the entire community involved. A collection box will be placed in the lobby to support their efforts. Please see the attached flyer.
Also, Laura Elsessar, President of the Save the Animals Club at Wachusett High School, along with her classmates are presenting the final movie of the year. On May 18th they will present the movie, Peter Rabbit, after school. All proceeds will go to a local animal shelter.
We are looking forward to working with the high school on these worthwhile endeavors.

What is Happening at Glenwood
A Vocabulary Parade is Coming May 22nd!
The Vocabulary Parade is based on the book: Miss Alaineus, A Vocabulary Disaster written and illustrated by Debra Frasier. In this story, Sage, our heroine and a very word-smart fifth grader, publicly confuses the word “miscellaneous,” for the person, “Miss Alaineus.” She is devastated (wasted, ravaged), ruined (destroyed), finished (brought to an end), by this embarrassing mistake. But Sage transforms her mistake with a creative leap when she arrives on the Vocabulary Parade school stage as Miss Alaineus, Queen of All Miscellaneous Things—and thereby proves that her mother was right. There IS gold to be found in every mistake!
This very same Vocabulary Parade is coming to our school! Soon each student will be
selecting a word at school which will become a costume. Put your thinking caps on! How would you show the word ADRIFT? or SHORTSIGHTED? or ZIGZAG? From A to Z, consider
the entire dictionary your playground! A Costume Design Sheet will be coming home
soon. Your student will be asked for their selected word, a definition, a sketch of their costume, and a supply list. Help us make vocabulary building into a Parade of Words!
Please do not spend money on purchasing a costume. We are asking our students to think critically about a way to display this word without the expense of a costume.

March/April 2018 Health Update
Welcome to the Health Update- I wanted to let you know that we are still seeing cases of the flu this season. We need to continue to follow the same precautions we have been doing to help prevent the spread of the flu. We had a presentation put on by the Wachusett Medical Reserve Corp on Whack The Flu and things you can do to help prevent it.
1. The number one priority is to practice good hand washing at all times. Wash your hands often with soap and warm water, especially after sneezing and coughing.
2. Practice good cough and sneezing etiquette by sneezing into a tissue or your elbow instead of your hands. Discard the tissues in the basket and wash your hands again.
3. Avoid people who are sick.
4. If your child is sick, or has flu like symptoms( fever of 100 or above, sore throat, runny nose), please keep your child home from school for at least 24 hours.
5. If your child is sick, please do not medicate them and send them to school- please contact your child’s Physician.
6. If your child has vomited and or had diarrhea within the past 24 hours, please do not send them to school. They need to stay at home for at least 24 hours after vomiting and diarrhea stops for at least 24 hours.
With Spring here and hopefully the weather turning warmer, we will also continue to think of the possibility of head lice and ticks. Head lice can be spread from close contact. Children should not be sharing hair implements, they should also not be sharing helmets and hats from various sports. If you discover your child has head lice- do not send them to school. You will need to notify your MD and they will need to properly treated before returning to school. They will need be checked here before they return to class.
Please be doing daily tick checks on your children as the weather is turning warmer. We have already seen several ticks from the warmer weather we had back in February.
To The Parents of 4th and 5th graders:
Thank You to those who have sent in recent copies of their children’s MD physicals and updated immunizations- I appreciate it! For those of you who haven’t been able to yet- if you could send them along as soon as possible, that would be great!
