In order to prepare students for a world connected by technology, we must teach them skills to appropriately and responsibly utilize digital networks, resources, and media.
Digital Citizenship includes:
- Digital access
- Digital communication
- Digital safety and security
- Digital etiquette
- Digital rights and responsibilities
- Digital law
- Digital health and wellness
- Digital commerce
Methods of teaching digital literacy to students:
- Case studies/ scenarios - Students respond to prompts or scenarios involving internet safety and responsibility by identifying the hazards and recommending appropriate alternatives.
- Games - Many Internet resources allow students to explore these topics through games.
- Class debates - Students are assigned roles and debate issues such as copyright and plagiarism.
- Multimedia projects - Students create multimedia products focused on informing their classmates of their rights and responsibilities.
- Media Messages - Students explore digital advertisements and discuss the messages being delivered.
