Too Much Exercise is Happening in Glen Ellyn
How to tell when you are exercising too much
Ask yourself these questions. As you can see by my picture above (not), I've had to ask these to myself many times, seeing as I compulsively exercise when I'm not careful. If you find yourself answering yes to the following questions, it might time to re-evaluate your exercise regimen.
1. Am I consistently in pain the next day after I exercise?
2. Am I always more tired than I was a few weeks ago?
3. Do I fall ill more often than I used too?
4. Have painkillers become part of my budget?
5. Has my performance declined the past few weeks?
6. Do I exercise even when I know I shouldn't?
Moderation is a good thing, even for exercise
According to WebMD, federal exercise recommendations call for Americans to get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise for optimal health. And some studies have suggested that moderate-intensity exercise -- like walking -- may be just as beneficial as more vigorous exercise.
Hot Yoga Anyone?
Hot Yoga might not be considered moderation by many. After all, being in a room that is 105 degrees and 40% humidity for 90 minutes could easily be considered extreme by many. However, for those who "believe" hot yoga provides many health benefits. Even beginners can enjoy the benefit of feeling less stressed and more relaxed after their first class. The deep breathing techniques help to focus the mind on the breath. When this happens, the mind calms. Among yoga's anti-stress benefits are a host of biochemical responses. For example, there is a decrease in catecholamines, the hormones produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. Some research points to a boost in the hormone oxytocin. This is the so-called "trust" and "bonding" hormone that's associated with feeling relaxed and connected to others.
Healthy Eating in Moderation
Portion Distortion Average portion sizes have grown so much over the past 20 years that sometimes the plate arrives and there's enough food for two or even three people on it. Growing portion sizes are changing what Americans think of as a "normal" portion at home too. We call it portion distortion. NHLBI's Portion Distortion
