Meet your Media Assistant: Mrs. Tremble
Hello! I am so glad you stopped by! This is my first year as the Media Center Assistant. I grew up in northern Michigan and have lived in Swannanoa since 2008. I have been an active substitute teacher in the Owen school district since 2012. I attended college at AB-Tech and have a diverse background in childhood education. I enjoy hanging out at the beach with my family, reading, gardening, and baking. I can't wait to meet you. Please stop by and check out our awesome media center!

Laptop Procedures:
- Congratulations! As a middle school student you have the privilege and responsibility of using a school issued laptop. If you are a 6th grade student, your computer will stay plugged in your homeroom cart overnight. If you are a 7th or 8th grade student, you are welcome to take your computer home. We recommend leaving your charger at home so that it does not get lost or stolen, and so that you may charge your computer EVERY night. Your computer battery should last the entire school day when properly charged.
- Computers MUST always be transported in a protective sleeve. You may use your own protective sleeve or purchase one from the media center or front office for $7.00.
- Again, you are responsible for you computer and charger. Chargers cost $50.00 to replace. Anything not deemed as normal wear on you computer, such as permanently marking the plastic casing, will be viewed as defacing school property and a fine will be assessed.
- One last important note...please completely shut down (not restart) your computer at least once a week. This gives your computer a chance to check for updates.
Library Procedures:
- There is always something happening at the OMS library! You may come to the library before and after school. Please get a pass from you classroom teacher and have him/her contact us before visiting during the day. We may have a class in session at that time.
- Students are limited to (3) books for (3) weeks. We do not charge late fees, however, YOU are responsible for returning your book(s) in GOOD condition. If you completely neglect to turn in your book(s), you will not be allowed to check out more books until the late book(s) is returned.
- Damaged or lost books are assessed a fee based up the purchase amount of the book and the extent of the damage. Students who wish to work off their fees instead of paying cash may do so by filling out a Student Work Form. You may pick up a Student Work Form from the library.
Now, on to the fun stuff...
- We have an extensive genre list, again, we have something for everyone! Whether you like fiction or non fiction...we've got it. We love helping students find a good read, just ask! If there is a title you do not see on our shelves, please ask! If we do not have it, and it is middle school appropriate, we will gladly add it to our future purchase list and our "Book Request" board.
- We offer technological support for staff and students, before, during, and after school.
- There is a large student supply area near the entrance of the library. Students are welcome to use these materials in the library.
- Students are allowed to print materials for school use only. You may email the item(s) you wish to be printed to Ms. Sturdivan or Mrs. Tremble. We will print first thing in the morning and at the end of each school day. You may pick up your copy(s) in the media center. If you wish to have your item(s) printed during the day, you may email the item(s) to your teacher and they can send it to the printer.
Battle of the Books
Each year middle school students across North Carolina battle it out over a fun selection of assigned books. This is a voluntary reading incentive program that encourages reading while also having fun competing with peers. Students can pick up a list of titles from the media center or click on the link below. BOB selected titles are available in the library.
Gravity Games
Do you enjoy science and a little adrenaline? Then you should check out our Gravity Games Club! Students are given the opportunity to work as a team to build a box car. Students will then have a chance to race in the official annual Gravity Games in Lenoir, North Carolina.
Maker Space
Do you love to sew, code, or play board games? Our Maker Space has an unlimited selection of things to make! We also have Snap Circuits, Legos, Kinnex, a green screen, and stop motion movies.
3-D Printing
What is that sound you say, as you enter that media center? It's not R2D2, it's Owen Middle's very own 3-D printer! We welcome you to design a 3-D print and are happy to print for free as long as it is your design. New to 3-D printing? We'd love to help you get started on a design in our Maker Space, before or after school!
