FROM OUR ADMINISTRATORS
From Mr. Bachmeier's Desk (School Superintendent)
Wow has time been flying here at DL-B! It is hard to believe that we are two months into the school year and closing in on the end of the first quarter. School is in full swing and we have developed a new normal for our students to be learning efficiently and effectively.
First, I would like to thank everyone who took part in our homecoming festivities this past month. The school pride that was witnessed from dress up days, volleyball crowd participation, coronation, school wide pep rally, football game cheering and dance were all successful during the week. Our students were excited, played well, and were appropriate during the festivities and showed that Laker pride is very much alive, and traditions are proudly continued.
When looking inside our buildings and classrooms, I am very excited to attest that our students have been actively and eagerly learning. For those of you who do not get the opportunity to see how our students are learning, one of the best feelings in the world is to see a student learn a concept, grasp the material, retain it, and reiterate the material to you or someone else. People often tell me that school and the way students learn are not the same as it was when they went to school. I want to tell you yes that is true, the school and students are “different” from when we were in school; however, I must say that our world has also changed, and that students may not be learning material in the same fashion. However, I believe that much of the material our students are learning today has greatly advanced from when we were in school and that in order to be successful in society our students must be ready to meet those demands. I believe that the way students learn will never be the same from one generation to the next as our society’s needs and the demand of the outside world is always changing. Therefore, our school and academic rigor must not only match what the needs of societies are, but also what makes our students prosper.
As we look ahead into this month of October, I would like to remind parents that Parent Teacher conferences are approaching. Studies and statistics have shown that when parents attend conferences with the teachers, that the students perform better in their classes. I implore you to take part in our parent teacher conferences as they arise and that this will be a positive experience for you to learn how your child is doing and to help keep the lines of communication open for the maximum success for our students!
In closing, I must remind you that with fall comes cold weather and even snow. We ask that all our students come prepared for the cold weather. Hats, gloves, and coats are a necessity this time of year. Even though our high school students do not go outside for recess like our elementary students, they do however, wait for buses, drive cars, and walk to school. We ask that if your child has not been wearing proper outdoor clothing, please see to it they are dressed appropriately for the upcoming season changes.
Be well and have a great month!

October Elementary Events
On October 19th we will be having our second annual Career Day for elementary students. Students in grades kindergarten through six will hear from different professionals in their field, you will find more information below from Mrs. Fischer.
On October 25th we will have our first ever STEAM night from 5:30-7:30pm for grades K-6! Minot Discovery Center will be coming to Des Lacs Burlington Elementary's gymnasium with ten stations that have activities that align with science, technology, engineering, art and/or math. Parents and students will rotate through the stations at their own pace. Concessions will be served at the event.
We will also have a kindergarten meet and greet the same night as STEAM night on October 25th from 5:30pm-6:00pm. This is an opportunity for kindergarten parents to connect with other kindergarten parents. Please look for more information for both of these events in the weeks to come!
Parent-Teacher Conferences are being held at the elementary school on October 17th from 4:00-7:00pm and October 18th from 4:00-6:00pm. Your child's classroom teacher will be reaching out with more information. Be sure to checkout the Scholastic Book Fair in the library on one of these nights! Students will also get a chance to purchase books during school time on Wednesday, October 19th.
On Monday, October 3rd teachers and administration looked at all the students in the elementary school to ensure all students had a trusted adult. Staff determined strategies to ensure that all students social emotional needs are being met. We were also able to dive into the new reading curriculum to prepare themselves for the rest of the year and determine how best to meet all students needs in reading and math. Yoga started the day to get blood flowing and add strategies to each teacher's toolbox for the classroom, thank you Danielle!

It’s hard to believe that we are closing in on the end of our first 9 weeks of school! With the start of our second 9 weeks, our junior high students will be transitioning to their new 9-week courses. Depending on their schedules, our 7th grade students’ new 5th hour class will either be Art, Ag Education, Science Exploration, or Financial Literacy. Our 8th grade students’ new 4th hour class will either be Driver’s Education, Family and Consumer Science (FACS), Music Appreciation, or Spanish. So far, the start of the school year has been successful, and I look forward to a smooth transition into our second 9 weeks of school!

National Honor Society Information
Membership criteria
To be selected to the National Honor Society, students must have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. They are also required to complete an information form showing their interest and desire to be a part of this organization. The information forms are reviewed and selections are based on a variety of factors, which can be reviewed in the bylaws linked to the website (see below).
For students considering NHS as an option in the coming year, we highly recommend keeping track of community service hours over the summer and into the next school year. The current bylaws require a minimum of 10 service hours per year for all members. Other requirements include attending all monthly meetings, carrying goals of scholarship, leadership, character, and service, and actively participating in group projects through the year.
Information forms will be shared with eligible students in January 2023. For more information, please contact the chapter advisor, Mary Eldredge Sandbo at the high school.
