Important Updates From Our Home and School Association

Welcome back to the first full week of school in 2020! So let’s get back to business regarding all things HSA :)

Home and School Executive Board Meeting Monday, January 13th at 7:00 PM BSES LGI --All are welcome!

LET’S GET READY TO BINGO!! Bingo Family Fun Night is coming to Bethel Springs on Friday, February 7th! The event will be held in three separate sessions: Session 1 from 5:15-6:30, Session 2 from 6:45-8:00, and Session 3 from 8:15-9:30. Tickets are $5 per person. Students, siblings and family members are welcome! Save the date now; all the info to register is coming next week.

BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION REMINDER: Look for another paper collection coming soon, but in the meantime, don’t forget about using the Box Tops app to earn even more cash for our school! Going forward, instead of clipping from packages, all Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipts using the Box Tops mobile app, which is available from the Apple Store or Google Play. For more information, check out this LETTER or head to (FYI-Our school is listed as "Bethel Springs Elementary" in Marcus Hook.)

“Give Credit” on the Box Tops Mobile App: When families use the Box Tops app to scan their store receipt, they can "Give Credit" to their student's classroom. To "Give Credit" make sure you have the latest version of the Box Tops app, scan your receipt, then tap the star icon to enter your "Give credit" memo. Please enter the TEACHER NAME in the memo.

SHOPAROO: And while you’re scanning receipts for Box Tops, might as well get the most bang for your buck by also scanning them using the Shoparoo app! If you are not familiar with Shoparoo, which is available from the Apple Store or Google Play, families can use the app to scan and upload receipts from grocery stores, restaurants, and retail stores. Bethel Springs earns points for each receipt uploaded (think Acme, Giant, Wegmans, Trader Joes, Whole Foods, Target, Walmart, BJs, Costco, etc), and participants can track who is leading with the most points in the school and in their grade for a friendly competitive bonus. Please visit to learn more about this hassle-free fundraiser.

Nature Trail: Thank you to the Markowitz Family for taking such great care of the Nature Trail during the week of December 16th! (And don’t forget that there are still some Keeper of the Trail volunteer slots available in January/February; check out the Sign-Up Genius HERE to see what’s available and to sign up.)

Between the weather and scheduling conflicts, the event has been rescheduled to Saturday, January 25th from 9am-12pm. For those keeping score, this is outside of the official Christmas Bird Count window, but I would rather have the count on a favorable weather day instead of no count at all!

Also, registration is still available for the winter session of the after school BSES Birding Club! The club season starts in less than two weeks from now. Here is more information on these upcoming events and more:

                                                                  Trailblazers BSES Birding Club

Join Trailblazers for an exciting after-school environmental education experience! We will spend our sessions on the BSES Nature Trail studying the birds found in our local ecosystem. We will collect scientific data using the website eBird to study populations and migration patterns of species on the BSES Nature Trail. Students should be prepared to venture on our wonderful nature trail on a weekly basis as we watch the trail change throughout the fall season! Please note this club is only available for students in grades 2 through 5.

The Christmas Bird Count is the longest running wildlife survey in the world! In this survey, ordinary citizens collect scientific data by observing both the types and numbers of birds found in an area. We will begin our day with a presentation highlighting birds of the Nature Trail. Next, we will venture onto the trail in search of birds while practicing field techniques such as binocular use and data collection. The morning will conclude with refreshments as we submit our count data to the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology’s online bird population database, Once we compile our data, every participant will have their own checklist to commemorate this awesome day of birding!
The session will run from 9am-12pm and will meet in the LGI. Bring your own binoculars. If needed, BSES has pairs to lend. Please dress in appropriate footwear and winter clothing in preparation for hiking. This session is for 1st through 8th grade students.
                                                                  Leaders: Mr. BQ

No Name Calling Week is a national observance to call attention to the need to be kind and respectful toward others and to appreciate what is unique about each of us. To support this, we are asking everyone to think about how words and actions can hurt. We will challenge ourselves to use kind words and do kind deeds and see how good it feels to be both on the giving and receiving ends of such words and actions. During this week all students will hear a story titled The Cool Bean by Jory John and Pete Oswald and will engage in activities related to the book. On Friday, January 24th we will celebrate "Proud to be Me Day" --a favorite with our students and staff. This is a special Spirit Day in which each student and staff member gets to come to school dressed up in something special that celebrates his/her personality and interests. Students and staff can come dressed as an Irish Dancer, a Sports Player, someone from a favorite book or movie such as Harry Potter or Star Wars—whatever expresses some aspect of one’s personality and interests! Creativity is encouraged! At Bethel Springs we always strive to be kind and respectful toward others, but No Name Calling Week is a time to give this extra emphasis.
                                                                  Big picture
