John Locke and his "Essay Concerning Human Understanding"
John Locke has contributed to classical republicanism and liberal theory and they are reflected in the Unites States Declaration of Independence. In his essay of human understanding he proposed that everyone had the right of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness when they are born. He also said that we are all born with our minds as a blank slate, which is filled with knowledge gained through experience. Our ideas are based on primary qualities of things, such as shape and motion, which allow us to feel sensations for ourselves through secondary qualities such as smooth and sweet.
