A Brave War Hero and Honest President
Growing up as a child
Ulysses S Grant was known for many things such as being a brave war hero and an honest president. Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27th, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Growing up as a child he enjoyed playing or riding on horses. When Ulysses was a year old his family moved to Georgetown, Ohio. They needed a bigger house. Soon, more children came along. Ulysses had a brother. His name was Samuel, and then three sisters, there soon was another boy born that was also Ulysses brother. As a child, Ulysses worked in his dad's tannery. He loved to train horses. When Ulysses was older he went to college. It was very rare for people to go to college back then. When he was 17, he joined the U.S Academy at West Point. In 1848, Ulysses married Julia Dent. A few years after they got married a child was born. He was soon named Frederick Dent Grant. When Ulysses left the army he worked as a businessman for the next 7 years, but he was not successful. After Ulysses was not president He failed business again. After his president terms were over he was affected by cancer. Soon, his family grew poor. So to support his family he wrote the story of his life. Ulysses died of cancer. Soon after his book was published by Mark Twain. The book became a great success and made his family rich. Ulysses died at the age of 63. Two people from the North and two people from the South carried Ulysses’ casket at his funeral.
A brave war hero and an honest president
While Ulysses S. Grant is best known as our 18th president, his contributions as a war general are just as important. He lead the Union Army to victory in the Civil War as an Army Officer. He fought in the Mexican War from 1846-1848. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Ulysses joined the army again. He was a good leader. A year later, president Abraham Lincoln made Ulysses head of all the Union Armies. The Union Army fought for the North. In 1861 Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina and Tennessee seceded from the Union and the Civil War broke out. Ulysses S Grant served president Lincoln for two terms of the U.S.A. It was 1864 when president Lincoln appointed Ulysses as Lieutenant General. Soon, he rose to the top rank of General. Five years after all the votes were added up and taken he got sworn in to be president. Later, Ulysses was re-elected as president. He worked to protect the rights of American Indians and African Americans. Ulysses was re-elected for a 3rd time. Then, the country fell into a Great Depression. Luckily, Ulysses kept it from worsening. After that was over, Mark Twain published a book about Ulysses. He wrote it when he was alive.
