From the Business Office: School Fee Balances

The district's current outstanding fee balances on active students is $934,826.84. If we add in outstanding fees for inactive students, the district's total is $1,012,031.89. Deerfield's outstanding balance for active and inactive students is $20,270.19 and $65.00 respectively.

Fees assessed to a student dated prior to May 1, 2023 will be sent to collections on June 15, 2023. March statements included a sticker with this deadline to make families aware of this date.

Districtwide, we have 1,354 students who qualify for free or reduced-priced lunches whose families have not submitted a Consent for Disclosure form. The Consent form is not required, but if it is completed and on file in the business office this allows certain fees to be waived.

Penny Wars to Take Place April 3-7

Start collecting coins to support your student’s classroom April 3-7 in a Battle to Fight Hunger! Pennies (and paper bills) earn “positive points” for the classroom, while silver coins can be donated to competing classrooms as “negative points”. No worries, all money raised will be a huge PLUS for Just Food — each $1 donated helps them provide 2 meals in our community.

Students can win daily mini-prizes if their classroom is in the lead, and the classroom to collect the most positive penny points over the whole week wins a Topper’s Pizza Party!

Mrs. Hett is February’s High Five Winner!

Congratulations to our High-Five February winner, Mrs. Lori Hett!

Mrs. Hett is Deerfield’s cafeteria supervisor and library aide! She was nominated by Elijah Franklin, a student in Mrs. Fisher’s kindergarten class. Elijah thinks Mrs. Hett deserves a HUGE high-five because “Lori knows that I get worried at lunch and always makes sure to check on me!”

Congratulations Mrs. Hett! Thank you for all that you do for our students!

The beautiful flowers were donated by Dillons on Lawrence Avenue. Mrs. Hett, Elijah and his class will be treated to a pizza party from Toppers to celebrate!

Thank you to all the students who nominated our amazing Deerfield staff and teachers this month. Nominations for March will be accepted until Tuesday, March 21st! Students can fill out a paper form in the library or complete an online submission here: https://forms.gle/K59vX78cMufd1bvc8

Deerfield VIP- Very Important People Volunteers

In an effort to be inclusive of all people, Deerfield is moving away from the WatchDOGS program and moving to Deerfield VIPs. Deerfield VIPs (Very Important People) is a volunteer opportunity aimed at adults who are important to our students. Deerfield VIPs can be individuals who serve as a positive role model in the life of any Deerfield student. As a Deerfield VIP, you will volunteer for your child's teacher/grade level in a variety of settings and complete a variety of tasks. For example: a Deerfield VIP could help supervise recess, work with small groups of students, and/or complete clerical tasks. The VIPs will receive a daily schedule for the amount of time they volunteer. VIP dates/times are at the discretion of the classroom teacher. Due to limited space, VIPs will not be able to stay for or to help with lunch in the cafeteria. At this time, we're asking that VIPs only sign up for a maximum of 2 times per semester.

Changemaker of the week:

Our goal is for our students to see themselves in our change makers and to also learn that they can do anything they put their mind to. Another goal is for our students to see people who are unfamiliar to them, to grow in empathy, and push for justice for the inequalities that marginalized communities face.

Equity Resource Guide

The Equity Resource guide was created by the Deerfield Equity team in the hopes that families can find resources, events and additional information to support our vision of all students attaining an equitable education. Expect 1 more guide to be sent out this year.

Important Attendance Reminders:

Please call or email to notify us any time your child is absent from school by 8:30 (deer.attendance.googlegroup@usd497.org or 785-832-5660). Please remember, we need a doctor's note if your child is absent three or more consecutive days AND after your child has been absent from school a total of 15 days.

All parents/guardians must come into the school to sign out their child if checking them out during school hours. This was our policy prior to Covid and we are now following this procedure again.

Deerfield Expectations

Below you will find our Deerfield Expectations for following our 3R's - Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Ready to Learn. Students will be taught our expectations within the first few weeks of school. Please help reinforce these expectations with your student(s).
