What is DESERTIFICATION and why is it happening?

Desertification is the changing of land from a fertile are to a desert. Desertification is also happening in Egypt as well as many countries in Africa. The Nile Valley in Egypt is a narrow strip of land that borders the Nile River. The Nile Valley is surrounded by deserts on both sides and is in danger of desertification. Desertification near the Nile River is due to population growth, urbanization, and humans using up the resources in that area of the country. Humans are also causing desertification by excessive irrigation. A natural factor of the desertification in the Nile Valley is soil erosion. The effects of the causes listed above are the decrease in soil fertility and therefore lowering land productivity. So the agriculture in areas near the Nile River (almost every city in Egypt is located near the Nile River) are doing very poorly. Animals are also affected because of the change in the environment.

The Solution

The Moringa Tree

In Egypt anti-desertification reasearch is being done. Reasercher have found an possible soluion. A plant known as the moringa tree can help keep farmland productive so soil will not erode away. This plant grows in subtropical regions and can be grown in Egypt along the fertile banks of the Nile River. The moringa tree isn't justa crop to keep the land productive it is also a type of plant who's leaves have...

  • 7 times the amount of vitamin C in oranges
  • 4 times the vitamin A of carrots
  • 4 times the calcium in milk
  • 3 times the potassium of bannanas
  • 2 times the protien in yogurt

By planting these moringa trees desertification would decrease and erosion would be less. And just like that every tree could make a difference.

The Funding

This project is funded by trees for life. This program gets people all aound the world to plant moringa trees and tell other people about it. Trees for Life's main goal is to prevent hunger and malnutrition. However they are open to new ideas that you can contribute. By logging on to there website you can see what their goals are and how you can help whether it is donations, volenteering anor teaching.
