The Tiger in You...October 16, 2017
Last week's staff development allowed us an opportunity to strengthen our instructional practices and to learn more about the characteristics of gifted and talented students, delve into our campus data, collaborate with our colleagues, and design meaningful lessons. In the math department, training was shared on how to create well designed test questions. “When developing tests questions do you ask questions that have been shared on a review only or do you incorporate questions of challenge—types of questions where students may not have seen the material before?” I thought this was an interesting concept. During my schooling, it was consistently demonstrated that reviews were given to cover what was going to be assessed. However, the presenter shared the importance of modeling and teaching students how to tackle problems they may not have seen before; though, they have been taught the skills to resolve. Educationally, we must create an environment where students grapple through issues that make them uncomfortable. Thus, some of the best learning comes from the experience and a can-do mindset.
I also benefited from the conversations regarding gifted and talented students. There is no doubt that children of color and impoverished students are often under-identified. So, we must be knowledgeable on their characteristics and differentiate instruction, and provide meaningful, challenging work at a rigorous level.
Finally, data disaggregation, reflection, and understanding why students failed or why students did well are a must! During data disaggregation, I heard teachers sharing various practices to enhance learning, and I witnessed it first-hand on Tuesday. Algebra I hosted its first Credit Rally--students who earned a 60-69 on their report cards were invited to participate. Each student was paired with an upper level math student, and they worked through various activities to recoup their points (up to a 70). I saw students being successful in their learning and a sense of pride from our student tutors. Clearly, there is no one size fits all box when educating students, but a willingness to allow the data to drive instruction is critical to the process.
Thank you so much for your commitment to learning, growing, and being the best teacher for our students. Keep making a roar and sharing the Tiger in you!
