Mensaje de la directora/Principal’s Message
Wow.
Y entonces, comprometernos a mejorar.

Sinceramente,
Nicole Bellini
Wow. What a school year! In my 18 years in education I have never had a school year quite like this one. I want to thank our teachers, students, and parents for their flexibility, patience and hard work during e-Learning. We made the best of a difficult situation and will continue to improve our practices based on your feedback. Thank you to the Red Oak PTO for supporting the district’s number one priority of making sure our students and families were fed during this crisis. Thank you to the Red Oak families who donated to the cause.
I don’t have answers about what next school year will look like at this time, but can assure you the district is working hard to create a plan for next school year. It is our hope to begin the school year in person. Dr. Lubelfeld will share the plan at the Board of Education meeting on June 30. I encourage you to tune in to this important meeting. Please check your email throughout the summer for important updates from the district.
Unfortunately, the Coronavirus pandemic is not the only crisis our country is facing right now. As a school leader, I feel compelled to say something about the racial injustices that have plagued this country for generations. As parents and educators, we cannot turn a blind eye to racism. We cannot perpetuate racism with our silence. As Dr. Carmen Ayala, State Superintendent, said in her weekly message to principals this week, “It is not enough to simply say racism is wrong.” We must examine ourselves, our words, our actions, and our instructional practices for racial biases. And then we need to commit to improving. As the leader of Red Oak Dual Language Academy, I commit to using my power, my platform and my privilege to speak out against racism. I commit to working with the Red Oak staff to create a more culturally responsive school. I commit to examining the practices at my school for racial inequities and eradicating them.
We need to do better to educate our students to value differences. A person should never be treated differently simply because of the color of their skin. It is our obligation to talk to our kids about racism. Our children are watching and learning from us. I know we can do better to make this world a better place. I have included some resources below to get us started.

*What is White Privilege, Really? - An important foundational learning resource for understanding that “white privilege is both a legacy and a cause of racism.”

I hope you will join me in taking a stance against racism.

Mrs. Bellini

We will miss Mrs. Salamanca very much and wish her the very best in her new position. We thank her for all she has done for our students at Red Oak over the years. We hope she returns to us soon!!
Consejos para Cerrar el Año Escolar
Advice for Closing the School Year
With the school year coming to an end and all of us getting ready to transition into summer, we want to recognize how important it is to obtain a sense of closure for this school year. We’ve been through a lot, both during remote learning and throughout the rest of the year. 2019/2020 will go down as one of the most unique, unusual, but also a very special year. Please see the attached letter from Mrs. Mannerino and Mrs. DeMarco with advice for closing the school year.
