High School Teachers Meet to Review Another Math Text Book
SUSD is on the verge of adopting a new math textbook for high school and possibly at the middle school. On Monday, January 6th high school math teachers met at Soledad High School to listen to the presentation about the second textbook, Illustrative Math given by Bernadetta Salgarino who is a Math Coordinator for Santa Clara County Office of Education. Her presentation gave a quick rundown about Illustrative Math, lesson plan, math matrix and also strategies when using this textbook. A two-day training has been scheduled at a later date for CPM training, and a third textbook would be reviewed also at a later date.

Another Day With Dr. Dewitt
Members of SUSD Student Services Team met with Dr. Peter Dewitt the author of Collaborative Leadership to discuss the following: Collective leadership efficacy, what would that look like at SUSD, and we used the Logic Model to look at our leadership practice and structure to determine if our practice is transformational or instructional. He shared how his work on leadership is framed through the lens of John Hattie’s research. Using the logic model, we discussed the effect size of traditional leadership versus instructional leadership and then discussed certain leadership practices. The topics below were, in a nutshell, the essence of our discussion
Transform our leadership practice
Identify where we can make immediate changes
Build and empower our leadership team
Incorporate all stakeholders into the conversation
Our District leadership team left with actionable and doable first steps to implement.

Chronic Absenteeism - The Problem
Success Stories about Improving Attendance
Using school attendance data, schools, families and community partners can together determine the causes of chronic absence and implement approaches that address barriers to getting to class. The federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires districts and states to collect chronic absence data and report it publicly. The majority of states have adopted chronic absence as a measure for school accountability.
The challenge of improving attendance is to avoid making the incorrect assumption that chronically absent students or their parents simply do not care. By working together, all of us — schools, public officials, public agencies, civic organizations, businesses, philanthropic groups, families, and students — can ensure all children can get to school every day so they have an opportunity to learn, flourish and realize their dreams.
