Peculiar Steam Family Week 3
Time Flies! We get 8 more days to make a difference!
Welcome to our New Students for Session 2
New students will arrive for 2nd session. Remember, it is their first day of Summer School. Help embrace them into our school family by doing the following.
- Make it a classroom job for returning students to be the ambassadors to welcome the new.
- Review your procedures and classroom practices.
- Be extra careful at dismissal. Check your email throughout the day to make sure parents have not just emailed you without contacting the office.
- Spend time getting to know your new students. Just 2 minutes can go a long way.
- Provide extra supervision during transition times.
- Let us know how we can help you.
Thank you for everything you do!
Technology is it a TOOL or a TOY?
Implementing technology at summer school can be challenging. During down time, students will turn to technology for play vs. learning
Do you have strategies to manage the technology?
- "1-2-3 chromebooks down or at a 45 degree angle"
- Email browser history to parents to show their learning - CNTL-H
Students love to play games for fun. How are you managing their use of game sites? Is it used for a reward at the end of the day or are students choosing to play games instead of learn during instructional or collaboration time?
Set the expectation for students to use non-tech options for when they are finished with digital learning. Extensive screen time actually changes brain development. Give their brains a break.
Heat Miser Alert
What does Heat Miser Alert mean?
The Heat Miser Alert means the real feel temperature is >96F. We must stay inside to prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Historically, it will go into affect after 11:00 or noon. Your scheduled "outdoor exploration" time is in the morning for this reason.
We have a few choices when we are in a Heat Miser Alert all day:
- Follow regular schedule and plan alternative inside movement activities during regular Outdoor Exploration scheduled time i.e. go noodle, walk-abouts, use the cafeteria, visit the focus room (call ahead first).
- Follow regular schedule and integrate several smaller movement breaks throughout the day.
- Extend Innovation Time for STEAM or revisit an activity from the last 2 weeks.
- Please limit video/movie watching as a time filler. Videos must be related to the curriculum.
