ATTENTION 5TH GRADE PARENTS
New Immunization Requirement!
For those of you already arranging your child’s summer doctor appointments, please be reminded that all students are required to receive a Tdap vaccination upon entrance to 6th grade. This booster shot is typically administered on or after the 11th birthday. If your child has not yet received his/her Tdap, please make arrangements for your child to receive this vaccination prior to the start of 6th grade. Community healthcare providers are typically very busy in the weeks leading to the start of fall classes, so you are encouraged to have your child immunized well in advance of school beginning.
If you do not wish to have your child immunized, you are required to sign a waiver. The waiver option is located on the bottom half of the immunization form. These forms are available from the District website (aasd.k12.wi.us) or from the elementary school office. If you already completed a waiver for your child in Kindergarten, you will need to complete a new waiver as this immunization is a new requirement.
If you need assistance or have any questions, please contact Debbie Olson, RN at 920.419.7302 or olsondeborah@aasd.k12.wi.us . Thank you for your prompt attention to this requirement.

THE HELEN & ADE DILLON AWARD FOR AASD STAFF
The Helen & Ade Dillon Award
for AASD Staff
Background
Helen and Ade Dillon were educators in the Appleton Area School District for 23 years and 35 years, respectively. During those years they left a distinguished legacy in the community.
Helen taught at the elementary level, English and Social Studies at the middle school level, and completed her career as a high school guidance counselor. In her retirement, Helen was an active volunteer for LEAVEN, Appleton Medical Center and Hospice, and also served as a volunteer teaching English as a Second Language.
Ade taught Social Studies at Appleton West and was well known as a coach, using sports as an additional medium to continue the educational process. He was instrumental in starting programs in tennis, wrestling, and swimming at West. Ade was inducted as a charter member of the Wisconsin Football Coaches Hall of Fame and was also awarded a Distinguished Service Award in the community. He was endearingly referred to by his players as a “builder of men.”
The Dillons’ dedication to education and values, and their commitment to students and the community, were accomplished with respect and class. Together, they left their students with richer lives and left the community a better place.

MIELKE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
Since 1983, outstanding AASD educators have been recognized through the Mielke Educator of the Year Awards. Is there someone you have worked with who you believe should be nominated for this award? To nominate an educator does take time and effort. The committee will want to know the nominee’s biography, his/her philosophy, and asks for letters of recommendation. However, when all the information is completed and placed in a binder, it becomes a tribute of the nominee’s contributions to education and can be a keepsake of their AASD career.
The Mielke Foundation has designated two categories for this prestigious award: Elementary and Secondary Levels. School staff, parents, students or community members may generate nominations.
Award winners will receive one unrestricted cash award of $1,000, which will be presented to a recipient at the Appleton Area School District All Staff Gathering August 25, 2020.
The attachment includes information regarding the Mielke Educator of the Year Award program, the selection process, and a nomination form. It is our hope that you will take the time and effort involved to nominate a candidate for the Mielke Educator of the Year Award for the 2019-2020 school year.
Please submit your nomination packets to Kimm Smith, School Services at the Scullen Leadership Center, by Monday, June 15th. Should you have any questions, please contact Kimm Smith at 832-6301.

Educator of the Year Awards
Funded by the Mielke Family Foundation
Program Description
The Educator of the Year awards have as their purpose the recognition of outstanding contributions to the education program of the Appleton Area School District by a teacher or professional educator from each of the levels, elementary level (EC-6) and secondary level (7 - 12). An ancillary purpose, though equally important, is to increase community awareness of the achievements and accomplishments of the public schools, thus heightening respect for the teaching profession as a whole.
The Awards
There will be one award granted in each category, elementary and secondary, in August of each school year. The winners will be presented their awards at the gathering of all staff members for the beginning of the school year activities and in-service or another such suitable occasion, preferably not in conjunction with other award ceremonies or graduation exercises.
Each entrant will receive a certificate of recognition and each winner will receive a plaque and an unrestricted cash award of one thousand dollars.
While it is planned to renew these awards yearly, the Mielke Family Foundation may, with proper notice, terminate their sponsorship at any time.
Considerations for Selection
Nominees will be judged primarily on the significance of their contribution to the well-being of the educational community, and on the impact of their contributions upon others. Considerations of the selection committee will include:
1. Has the nominee provided unique service or achieved above and beyond what is expected in the usual school assignment?
2. In what ways has the nominee beneficially affected each or any of the following areas: curriculum, staff morale, community relations, student interest, or individual or group achievements?
3. What positive changes have resulted from the nominee's instructional leadership?
4. Are there specific achievements or accomplishments of students that can be traced to the nominee's influence?
5. Will the nomination be concurred by representatives of other school and community groups?
Educator of the Year Award

C. The nominee should describe his or her philosophy of teaching or his or her approach to his or her professional assignment.
D. Each nomination should be accompanied by letters of endorsement from students, parents, colleagues, citizens in general, and administrators. Quantity is not the significant measure, but rather there should be a wide range of support demonstrated for the nominee.
E. The completed nomination package shall not exceed fifteen pages.
The recommended make-up of the package follows:
Biography 2 pages Philosophy 1 - 2 pages Letters of support:
From students 2 letters, 2 pages total
From teachers 2 letters, 2 - 3 pages total

IV. Time Line
Nominations can be made after March 1 each year and must be received in the School Services' office by June 15. The selection committee shall complete its task by August 1.
HAND WASHING CAN SAVE LIVES
Please see district website for all COVID-19 related updates and information:
https://www.aasd.k12.wi.us/news/what_s_new/covid-19_info_from_the_appleton_health_dept
HAND WASHING CAN SAVE LIVES!
Keeping hands clean is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. It is best to wash your hands with soap and clean running water for 20 seconds. However, if soap and clean water are not available, use an alcohol-based product to clean your hands. Alcohol-based hand rubs significantly reduce the number of germs on skin and are fast acting.
When washing hands with soap and water:
● Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap. Use warm water if it is available.
● Rub hands together to make a lather and scrub all surfaces.
● Continue rubbing hands for 20 seconds. Need a timer? Imagine singing "Happy Birthday" twice to a friend!
● Rinse hands well under running water
● Dry your hands using a paper towel or air dryer. If possible, use your paper towel to turn off the faucet
Remember: If soap and water are not available, use alcohol-based gel to clean hands.
When using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer:
● Apply product to the palm of one hand
● Rub hands together
● Rub the product over all surfaces of hands and fingers until hands are dry.
When should you wash your hands?
● Before preparing or eating food
● After going to the bathroom
● After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has gone to the bathroom
● Before and after tending to someone who is sick
● After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
● After handling an animal or animal waste
● After handling garbage
● Before and after treating a cut or wound
DRESS CODE REVIEW
We take pride in the appearance of our students. How students act is often affected by what they wear. Students are expected to dress appropriately in clean, well-fitting clothing appropriate for the weather. This makes them feel more comfortable about school and increases their chances of being successful students ready to learn.
Students’ dress or attire must adhere to the following minimum standards. The standards maintained align with the BOE approved policy 443.1, June 1999 found in the family district handbooks. ·
Students may not wear scanty/revealing clothing. Examples of these items include but are not limited to tube tops, halter tops, backless tops, strapless tops, spaghetti straps, and clothing that expose the midriff and/or undergarments.
· Students must wear shoes/appropriate footwear in and around the school at all times.
· Students are not allowed to wear head gear in the school building unless for traditional religious reasons.. Removing a person’s hat/hood when entering a building is a well-established sign of respect in our country and one that will be reinforced in our schools. Examples of head gear include but are not limited to hats, hoods, caps, and bandanas.
· No garments that advertise alcohol, alcohol establishments, tobacco products, or other drugs may be worn.
· No attire with messages or symbols that include profanity, violent or sexual language/actions, or inappropriate subject matter is allowed to be worn in the school buildings.
· Any attire or accessory which by its design, use or intended use, could cause bodily harm, property damage, or intimidation to other persons, may not be worn. Examples of these items include but are not limited to chains, leather straps, pet collars, and spikes.
· No attire with any gang-related purpose is allowed.
· Jackets, coats, and gloves must be removed at the student’s locker/hallway hook area. Any such items may not be worn around the building during school hours.
Body markings or tattoos that do not meet the above standards must be fully covered at all times.
This policy is in force during the school day, in school vehicles, and at all school activities. The wearing of outer garments and headwear will be permitted in school vehicles and at school activities when deemed appropriate by building administration. This list is not meant to be exhaustive; rather it is intended to provide some idea of acceptable dress. Since styles of clothing change rapidly, the administration reserves the right to restrict certain fashions that are inappropriate as well as interpret what is considered to be in poor taste or distracting to the learning environment. Members of the staff will use their professional judgment when enforcing this policy.APRIL CALENDAR
