If you know Mr. Crousore, you KNOW he is all about students and will go to the ends of the earth--or the top of a tall building--to support and encourage them! LN is committed to being a partner in reducing and eliminating youth violence in Indy.
"Brett Crousore, Lawrence North High School Principal and Jason Williams, Project Lead the Way teacher at Fall Creek Valley Middle School, will participate in the Indy Over the Edge on September 28. They will have the opportunity to rappel 17 stories down the Barnes & Thornburg building. Participants must raise a minimum of $1,000 to go Over the Edge. Senior Specifics...
Please review these important items with your senior...
College Application Deadlines
If your senior is stressed and snarling at you when you ask about the college application process, you are in good company! Seniors DO stress...a LOT...this time of year as they think, discuss, strategize, consider and often procrastinate about their college-going plan. If your senior seems to be struggling with this process, consider and share the following:
1) Formalize the process. Typically, the most stressful aspect of college apps is failing to have a written plan. If trying to keep everything in one's head, it absolutely becomes overwhelming and seniors believe they are behind.
A) Ask your senior to select 2, 3, or 4 colleges to the "Colleges I'm Thinking About" tab in Naviance. The simple act of choosing a few schools will often get the ball rolling
B) Look at the application process for the college of highest interest. The apps are not as daunting as many seniors believe. Again, seeing what is required will allow your senior to see the process is 100% do-able.
C) Discuss and agree to a schedule or timeframe. Nothing irritates a teen more than having mom or dad "nagging" about getting college apps done. Okay...we won't "nag"...if we know there is an agreed upon appointment time to check in. Teens like independence. Give it to them. If your teen says, "I'll work on the app on Saturday," add it to a common calendar and don't bring it up again until the appointed time. Your teen will realize you ARE giving him/her freedom to navigate this process, AND you are there in support, available to help as needed.
***Teens may not say it, but they will appreciate having a plan to cling to and work from during this important, and stressful, process.
2) Deadlines--not every single college application must be submitted by November 1st. Colleges will accept applications for many months after, some accepting apps through July 31st! Look back at that list--"Colleges I'm Thinking About"--and note the deadlines for applications, scholarships and any other programs of importance.
3) Uncertainty--though they often tell us they "can't wait to get out of here," the reality is transitions can be scary! Validate that fear...it's REAL, but it doesn't need to be debilitating! Talking about fears of the future, worries about choosing the "wrong" career or major, worries about the "perfect" college, worries about leaving the KNOWN (high school) for the UNKNOWN (college, military, workforce, etc) can all cause some serious stress and doubt. THIS. IS. NORMAL. And...expected. Go back to step 1...if college-bound, formalize a plan. If unsure, formalize a plan. If lost, formalize a plan. The act of THINKING about what comes next will help to move your senior from inaction to action...and once moving, all things are possible!
Common App
Seniors applying to colleges through the Common Application must INVITE their counselor to the process. Counselors must submit documents on behalf of the senior, but cannot do so unless linked (invited) to the student's Common App account. This is a CRITICAL and NECESSARY step in the application process. PLEASE do NOT have to wait until you submit your Common App to colleges to invite your counselor. QUESTIONS? Contact your assigned counselor.
***COMMON APP DEADLINE FOR COUNSELOR RECOMMENDATION is Wednesday, Oct 24th. Common App invitations received after that date are NOT GUARANTEED to meet November 1st deadlines.***
Seniors in Naviance
As your senior completes and submits applications to colleges, it is CRITICAL s/he also indicates those applications in Naviance. Encourage your senior to work through Naviance as the giant, digital "folder" for all of the college applications and information necessary during the college-going process.
Is your senior not sure WHERE to apply? Naviance has a fantastic college search and research portal. Try the SUPERMATCH which requires a couple of pieces of information to begin connecting your senior to the colleges which BEST MATCH areas of interest.
Naviance is a great place to start and a reliable tool in the college-going process.
SENIOR EXPLORATION DAY 2018
Seniors and senior parents...now is a great time to plan for Senior Exploration Day 2018! All seniors will be OFF CAMPUS on Wednesday, October 24th, in completion of a Senior Exploration Day experience. Seniors will choose among:

Parenting Teens
Teens and Instagram
Scholastic and Instagram have joined forces to create a parent resource--"Know How to Talk with your Teen About Instagram."
Teens have 24-7 access to social media sites and platforms...state-of-the-art technology...and...even though tech and tools are sophisticated, the development of the teen brain--impulse control, self-regulation, decision-making--is pretty much unchanged from generations past.
As parents, we can use all of the help, resources and support we can access to help our teens work through typical teen development with the added challenge of technology. Learn more by reading the INSTAGRAM: A Parent's Guide
