Felt meets Indigo meets Ecoprint
October 22-26, 2018 - Pia Best & Beth Marx

5 DAY WORKSHOP WITH BETH & PIA
NOTE: Prior felting experience is not required and beginners, as well as more advanced felters, are welcome.
DAY ONE AND TWO: Beth will teach you how to create a pattern resist from one of your own existing garments and to easily size it up to account for felting shrinkage using her "Easy Peasy Shrinkage Calculation" sheet which really makes the shrinkage calculations a no brainer. You will learn how to felt on this sized up resist pattern to create a beautiful, drapeable, seamless nuno felted garment with no sewing at all.
DAYS THREE, FOUR & FIVE: Pia will show you the details of dyeing with indigo crystals, including making a vat and testing different fabric samples like wool, silk, cotton, linen and viscose jersey to see the different results and get a better understanding of how indigo works. After this introduction participants will dye the nuno felted garment they created in Day 1&2 as well as viscose jersey and other textiles, scarves, etc.
Next Pia will teach her technique of ecoprinting using iron pipes in different variations to show how experimenting with different variables can change the result and to inspire trying new ways for an individual look. Pia will talk about different plants and their effects focusing on native and locally available plants. Additionally Pia will show different ways of designing pieces to find a well balanced design suited to the different purposes of the textile, like pre sewn garments, pre cut garment patterns, scarves or decorative textiles. You will be free to apply the techniques according to your individual interests.
Pia's daughter Marie will act as Pia's co-teacher to be able to respond to the
different levels of experience so that everyone can take new input and
inspiration home with them.
