MCMS Math Department
Grades 5-8
Mathematics, Grades 5-8
Our math classes in grades 5 through 8 are aligned to the PA Core Standards. In addition to the traditional Core Math classes, we also offer Algebra 1 at the middle school level when appropriate. The Common Core standards have raised the rigor of the general mathematics curriculum, shifting the focus from calculations to a priority on problem-solving and application.

High School Math Credits
Learners who have taken Algebra 1 or 2 at the Middle School level have the opportunity to earn math credits counting toward the graduation requirement of 4 math credits. Learners could enter the HS with either 1 (Alg 1) or 2 (Alg 1 & 2) credits. These credits would have no weight or grade attached. Learners must meet the following criteria:
- Earn a 70% or higher for Alg 1 and/or Alg 2
- Score Proficient or Advanced on the Algebra Keystone
IU13 Math 24 Competition
Each May, MCMS sends learners from 4th-8th grade to compete head-to-head with learners from other districts in the Math 24 tournament hosted by the IU13. With as many as 125 competitors, the action is intense, but MCMS learners consistently bring their "a-game." We have had learners in the top 4 each of the past four years and several have won first place! Stay tuned for details this winter for qualifiers at the middle school to determine who will go to the IU13 tournament.
