Resources...Election Process

PBS Election Central is a great resource to help students understand the election process.

Nice Video on how the Electoral College works.

Another video on electing a US President.

Get a free poster of the Electoral College Map by signing up for CSpan Classroom.

EDPuzzle

This is a neat app that allows you to choose a video (Ted, Youtube, Khan, Numberphile, National Geographic, etc) and add quizzes and audio to the videos. This also integrates with Google Classroom.

Facebook Biography project

Here's some good information on how to have students create a fake Facebook profile for a biography project.

I just finished reading Orbiting Jupiter by Gary D. Schmidt, and I really enjoyed it. The story is about Joseph, an eighth grader who has had more life experiences than any 14 year old boy should. He comes from an abusive family and is also the father of Jupiter, an infant whom he has never met and is not allowed to have contact with. At the start of the story, Joseph goes to live with a loving family and works on their farm. I'll leave the rest of the story for you to read, but it was a tale of love, courage and humility.

I am currently reading Most Dangerous: Daniel Ellsberg and the Secret History of the Vietnam War by Steve Sheinkin. Sheinkin is a rock star in the non-fiction world. He also wrote Port Chicago 50 and Bomb. Ellsberg worked for the Pentagon and was a supporter of the Vietnam War, until he stumbled across top secret documents called The Pentagon Papers. These papers brought to light the discrepancy of information between what was told to the American people and what was known by the presidents who were in office during the Vietnam War. If Ellsberg reveals top secret government documents, does that make him a traitor even if it might save the lives of countless soldiers? Comparisons are made between Ellsberg, Edward Snowden and Julian Assange.
