Tigerville Times
February 2020 Edition
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents,
Happy February! Can you believe that we have been in school over 100 days? Thank you for reading with your child each night and checking their “wow” word. I have been learning new words thanks to our children! Please check your calendar for upcoming events. If you have a chance, we would love for you to join your child for lunch sometime. We love having visitors!
Sincerely,
D. Jackson

Our Good Character word for February is ‘Tolerance’ – that is, tolerating opinions or behaviors that we don’t like, don’t’ agree with, or are different from ours. Our students will be learning about Tolerance during their classroom guidance lessons, and on our morning news show. Parents can help their children understand and learn about Tolerance by modeling tolerance – showing a willingness to listen to opinions they don’t like, don’t agree with or that differ from theirs – as opposed to criticizing or making fun or someone else for these same reasons.
Our Fifth Graders will have an exciting month, as they take a field trip to Blue Ridge Middle School for a tour on the 20th, then attend the annual Manners Luncheon on the 21st (a Tigerville tradition). To prepare for the luncheon, these students will hear a special presentation on Fine Dining Skills from the local chapter of Junior Cotillion. Fifth Graders will also receive materials and information about registering for their 6th grade middle school courses.

Music Notes
The second semester is off to a great start! Please allow your child to go to www.quavermusic.com to have some fun learning all about music. For 3rd-5th grades, this is a great resource for the Recorder. Piano music and videos, lines and space activities, and high and low for all the different grade levels are there for the kids to enjoy.
K4-K5 use Quaver music for all their lessons. Right now we are learning about Mrs. Austin Otto which is a musical phrase that repeats itself. 1st grade absolutely loves being in the piano lab. They are learning to play songs using only the black keys because they have to know their finger numbers well. So far they have learned about the Quarter Note, Half Note, and Whole Note. 3rd-5th are in full swing on the Recorder. I'm so sorry for all the parents that don't enjoy the constant practice of Hot Cross Buns. I still have about 10 Recorders left if your child would like to have one to practice. The cost for the Recorder is $5.
Our Aladdin rehearsals are going great. We have a ton of work to do making props, painting, sewing costumes, running lines, and learning dances. If you have any experience in musicals please feel free to offer help in any way.
Art Strokes
FEBRUARY is a great month for making art and We LOVE making art!! I am excited to share that we have many wonderful art experiences coming up in the next few weeks!
Grades 2nd – 4th will be introduced to storytelling, creative writing, and drawing hidden pictures through a wonderful artist in residence, Tim Davis! He is an Award – Winning illustrator and author with seven books published. One of which we will feature and have for purchase and autographed by the author!
This arts integration residency was provided at no cost to the school thanks to the SmartARTS TD Center for Arts Integration at the Metropolitan Arts Council, which receives funding from SEW Eurodrive, TD Bank, Graham Foundation, Jolley Foundation, ScanSource, Duke Power, and other individuals, corporations, and foundations. We are very appreciative for having the opportunity to work with the Metropolitan Arts Council as a partner in education!
A Tigerville Student showcase is planned for February 10th starting at 5:30. Showcase will begin with Family fitness night in the gym followed by an arts session in the cafeteria which will feature art students in demonstrating their art skills as well as our visiting artist, Tim Davis, and a special guest from the Lake Conestee Nature Park.
We also would like to thank the Metropolitan Arts Council in their continued support of our annual Tigerville Clay Night. This is an evening where parents, students, and the community are invited to come out for a night of creating clay art together! Mark your calendars for March 9th at 6:00 p.m. and be on the look-out for a clay night flier to come home with your children the week of February 10th. Spaces are limited and the event sells out quickly so be sure to register as soon as the information comes home!
Valentines are a wonderful artistic expression of love and friendship! Hand-made valentines are super fun and personal. I would like to share the following site as a wonderful resource along with great videos on how to make your own valentines! http://krokotak.com/. I encourage you to give it a try with your family! Some of our early finishers will be making valentines for some special people in our community supported by Visiting Angels through one of our Tigerville moms, Jeanette Maxey!
Sending you lots of love and joy for creative expression!
Stem Lab Notes
Our school received grant funding for a Rain Barrel and Weather Station Project. The Rain Barrel and Weather station project incorporates the engineering design process. The weather station is a tool for students to monitor and collect data on weather patterns and conditions. Students will read about the weather and conduct research on the functions and benefits of rain barrels. Students will learn how to install a rain barrel system in the school garden that catches the rainwater though a filter without relying on storm water runoff that is polluted. Garden club will be installing the rain barrels to help our school garden and flowerbeds. Each grade level will be voting on one of their water cycle designs to be painted onto a sign that will be placed next to each rain barrel.
K5 - Will be creating rain sticks and talking about precipitation
1st and 2nd grades - Will be creating the water cycle in a bottle and incorporating the terms of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation
3rd grade - Will be collecting and analyzing weather data
4th and 5th grades- Students will be creating models of a rainwater catchment system and conducting research to answer the essential questions in the project related to rain barrels and how they work
Additionally, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades will be coding with Ozobots and creating a water cycle diagram that includes their Ozobot code.
