Newsletter Week 6 Term 2

Meeanee School 8th June, 2022

MESSAGE FROM THE SWIVELLY CHAIR

Unbelievably it is halfway through the term already. COVID-19 is not the number one reason why students are away at present. Influenza seems to be taking a grip upon families and we are seeing a similar numbers of students away per day as towards the end of Term 1. Unfortunately this means that some students attendance rates are not looking as good as usual and this has a knock on effect for their learning. It is extremely important that students are at school if they are not sick or have extenuating circumstances.

Fingers crossed we are through the worst of it and students can get some consistent learning over the rest of the year. Further in this newsletter you will find advice from the HBDHB.

We are holding a working bee this Sunday 12th June at 9am. This is to carry out some odd jobs so we can keep the school looking tidy. We are not in the fortunate situation to have a full time property supervisor so as much assistance as possible is required. If you can help out please email principal@meeanee.school.nz. There is plenty of gardening, trimming, pruning etc... to be done. BYO tools! A couple of trailers would be great too!

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

This weeks PB4L focus is:

EXCELLENCE

We will clean up, even if it is not our rubbish.

ASSEMBLY WINNERS - no assembly last week

Congratulations

Congratulations to one of our Year 8 students, Tuta, who has made it into the Tautoko Basketball Club's Under 14 development team.

This means he will be playing the Hoop Nations basketball tournament in Tauranga over labour weekend.

Health Advice from HBDHB

Advice if unwell: Test for COVID-19 using a RAT. If you test positive, upload your result to your My Covid Record and follow the Ministry of Health advice. If you have had a COVID-19 infection within the previous 90 days and are unwell again it is very unlikely this is a reinfection of COVID. Repeat COVID testing (RAT and PCR) within these 90 days is necessary only on medical advice.

Stay home if unwell as winter viruses are very infectious. Return to school when symptoms have resolved. Wearing masks, cough etiquette and hand hygiene are strongly encouraged. This helps to reduce the spread to other people. Drink plenty of fluid, take some paracetamol or ibuprofen as directed. Paracetamol and ibuprofen can help reduce pain, headache and fever. Warm lemon and honey drinks have been found to be as effective as cough syrups. On average, a cough after a viral infection lasts for 17 days.

Teacher Only Day

On Friday, our staff took part in Professional Development with Karen Lethbridge from Evaluation Associates. We spent the day looking into our Writing programme and the way we assess our writing. Staff spent time altogether and as smaller groups to talk about expectations and what we are doing in classrooms.

Staff also all had to write a 5 minute story with the provocation of hut building. Wow! I didn't realise what talented writers our staff are. They all had to share their writing to the group and we were all stunned.

PTA

The PTA has decided for the first time ever to do a Whittaker's chocolate fundraiser. We are hoping each family at school will take a box of 36 chocolate bars to sell. They are $2 and if everyone is on board we will make a good profit that the students will benefit from.

The flavours are Peanut slab, Creamy milk, Hokey Pokey crunch, Coconut slab and Almond Gold.

The PTA has already committed to $2440 towards robotics and updating Jump Jam. We will also be purchasing a new BBQ. Other things are on the agenda too.

Every box sold will earn a raffle ticket to win a $50 grocery voucher.

Thanks to everyone for helping the Meeanee School PTA to support the wonderful children at our school with 'extras!'
