Steven Park
Students Camping in the Park
Reading Buddies- Quintanilla and Stevens Park are teaming up! Our wonderful Reading instructional coach, Laura Garber, and the AVID teacher from Quintanilla, Natalie Bielamowicz, have joined forces to create a mentor/ tutor program for our students. Ms. Garber went to Quintanilla and trained the students on how to be a reading buddy with students in lower grades. Ms. Garber, Ms. Bielamowicz and the Stevens Park teachers purposefully paired students based on interests and language levels. Each Wednesday, the Quintanilla students walk over during their AVID block and read with the younger students. The Quintanilla students gain community hours, and reinforce their own fluency while building fluency and mentorship with the younger students.
Coffee with the Principaws- Twenty parents joined the principal and assistant principals to talk about the pressing issues at Stevens Park. The group enjoyed a light breakfast and coffee while talking about the great start to the new year and proactive measures for the future.
PTA Spaghetti Night- The Stevens Park PTA is growing. The kick-off event was a wonderful spaghetti dinner night. Our PTA President, Gwen Montero, served up spaghetti and also more than 50 memberships. The PTA has quadrupled and is still growing!
Camp in at “The Park”- Over 300 parents, students and staff attended the Camp in at “The Park.” The night was planned around giving parents strategies to read with their students. There was a quick session on questioning strategies that parents can use at home. The students and parents then headed back to the classroom camp grounds to see the teachers model the reading strategies around the camp fires. Teachers, students and even the Principal enjoyed the pajama day to celebrate literacy!
Think Bright on Math Night- Math Night will happen October 8, 2015. Each grade level has prepared a make and take math center. The parents and students will watch the teacher model how the stations are made and then played. The families will get a chance to play their station and then take it home. All students and staff will be dressed in bright colors to show how bright their future will be!
