Thoughts & Ideas
With the weather becoming warmer, now is a great time to get outside and explore the great outdoors. Many of these activities can be performed inside, however if you have access to a safe outdoor space feel free to use it. The OT Newsletter theme this week is gross motor and bilateral coordination skills. Here is a brief description of some of the terminology we use.
Gross Motor: Coordinated body movements involving the large muscle groups. A few activities requiring this skill include running, walking, hopping, climbing, throwing and jumping.
Endurance: Our activity tolerance and ability to sustain muscle engagement during that activity.
Bilateral Coordination: The ability to use both sides of the body together in a smooth, simultaneous, and coordinated manner.
Midline/Crossing Midline: A median line dividing the two halves of the body. Crossing the midline is the ability to use one side or part of the body (hand, foot, or eye) on the opposite side.
Directionality: The awareness of right/left, forward/back, and up/down, and the ability to move oneself in those directions.
Core Stability/Trunk Stability: Being able to maintain one's body in a position to efficiently complete a task or demand, using large muscle groups from shoulders to the hips. This includes the balance between stomach and back muscles.
Hand-eye Coordination: The efficient teamwork of the eyes and hands, necessary for activities such as playing with toys, dressing, writing, and throwing a ball at a target.
Visual tracking: Following a moving object or a line of print with the eyes
Motor Planning: The ability to conceive of, organize, sequence, and carry out an unfamiliar and complex body movement in a coordinated manner.
