Always question. Always wonder.
3rd Grade Science
Third Grade is studying weather and climate. In previous weeks, students studied the weather in our local area, paying particular attention to temperature and precipitation. They also learned about the tools meteorologists use to forecast future atmospheric conditions. At the end of the unit, Third Graders designed "windproof houses." Students were tasked with determining how to keep the roof on a model home during a wind storm. They were challenged to figure out a way to keep their models from blowing off the table too!
To conclude our study of weather and climate, Third Graders learned about the five major climate zones: polar, temperate, mild/Mediterranean, desert, and tropical. Each student contributed to a display of the climate zones. Our display includes a map as well as pictures of animals and plants that live in each zone. Check out our display in the 2nd floor hallway!
2nd Grade Science
Second Grade scientists are learning about animal classification. They learned that animals can be sorted, or classified, into 2 major groups: vertebrates and invertebrates. Students learned that animals in each of those larger groups can be classified even more specifically. The vertebrates, for example, are further classified into mammals, fish, birds, amphibians, and reptiles. Students loved learning about the characteristics of each group and playing games to sort animals into the correct group. We made graphic organizers with words and pictures to keep track of what we learned!

1st Grade Science
First Grade scientists are learning about the sun, moon, and stars. Students especially liked learning about phases of the moon. We loved carving the moon phases out of Oreo cookies!
Most recently, First Graders listened to the book Sunshine Makes the Seasons by Franklyn M. Branley. We learned, "The sun shines all through the year. But we are warmer in summer than in winter. The amount of sunshine makes the difference." After reading the book, students enjoyed drawing and painting pictures of their favorite seasons.
Kindergarten Science
Kindergarten scientists have been learning to observe the weather. Students are keeping weather journals, and they have practiced recording their observations using words and pictures. Kindergarten scientists have also used thermometers to measure the temperature.
This week, we read Little Cloud by Eric Carle. We made our own imaginative cloud pictures with cotton balls after reading the story. Students loved using their imaginations to create "clouds" shaped like ships, butterflies, and even fighter jets!
