Roadrunner Report

The rundown on Ridgewood Elementary School-June 1, 2020

Principal Perspective - Connecting

We are so excited to connect with our students and families this week during our staff parade. We know it will be quick, and we won't have time to stop and chat, but seeing each other will definitely fill a lot of buckets. Our parade begins at 2:00 on Thursday, and the map is pictured below. If your house is not along the route, please find a spot that is. We can't wait to see you!

Connecting is also vital as we continue to witness the impact of racism on our country. We stand with all of our families, especially our Black/African American families, in rejecting racism and the trauma and violence it produces. In this week's SEL Times (linked below) we have included resources for talking with your children about race, and the resulting riots. Keep in mind, even if you believe your children are not aware of what is happening in our cities, they are likely seeing evidence of it, and are best to learn about how to respond from you.

Finally, we want to stay connected with you this summer! Below are details about our annual Camp Achieve, which will be all online this year. Several Ridgewood teachers will be teaching these classes, which will be similar in structure to the Distance Learning for All we have been engaged in these last two plus months. If you are interested, please register by the end of this week.

Camp Achieve

You are invited to participate in Camp Achieve this summer! We have changed the structure, so this summer, only students who are invited can participate. We hope you say yes!

What: The structure for Camp Achieve 2020 will be similar to how we finished the school year during Distance Learning for All. Students will be connected with a Beaverton teacher from June 29 through August 21. Students will be expected to read at least 30 minutes daily and complete at least one Dreambox lesson per day throughout the summer. Teachers will check in on student progress via Seesaw. Teachers will also assign one reading reflection, one writing prompt, one wellness activity, and one Social Emotional Learning activity each week. Students are expected to complete these activities each week. Teachers will also host four class meetings on Zoom during the 8-week camp to check on progress, build connections, and address any questions. We will also mail at least $20 in books if you participate!

Our goal is that you are reading and maintaining math and writing skills throughout the summer!

When: Family meetings on Zoom will be scheduled between June 8 and June 26. Student participation in Camp Achieve is June 29 through August 21, all online

Who: Ridgewood students entering grades 1-5 in the fall of 2020.

2020 - 2021 SCHOOL SUPPLY KITS | AVAILABLE FOR ORDER NOW!

**Please note, we are re-evaluating our Supply Lists to move away from community supplies and provide for possible home learning in the fall. Updated lists will be posted by June 15.***

If you click on the link above you can purchase all your school supplies for the fall for your child going into K through 5th grade next year, and support a small business at the same time! We changed companies from previous years and this company only serves about 6,000 schools nationwide. And you never have to enter a store! This will only be available until the 3rd week of June, so please order your supply kits now and pass this on to anyone else who has a Ridgewood student next year (including incoming K students). Oh, and this is NOT a fundraiser, simply a way for Ridgewood parents to get their school supply shopping done in 5 minutes or less :) Your supplies will be in your child's classroom in the fall when they arrive.

  • We are using 1st Day School Supplies for our school supply orders for the upcoming year. Below is a link to the store for you to purchase your supply kit. All kits will be delivered directly to the school before the start of school in the fall.
  • Supply kits must be ordered by JUNE 12th, 2020 to be included in the order.
  • The teachers have put in specific requests for items they want in the supply kits. We have addressed issues with the quality of the supplies as well.

For those who want to purchase supplies on their own, lists will be coming out. We will let you know when they are out.
In addition to resources provided to all BSD families, our Ridgewood Community has set up resources for our families, specifically our Little Free Library and new Little Free Pantry. Both are located at the front entry of our building, and have food, hygiene items, school supplies and books available for families. If you are able to contribute items to either pantry, please do so. You are welcome to take without giving and give without taking. If your family has a specific need to be met, please reach out to our staff as well, and we will help as we are able.

If at any time you are in need of emergency food, please call us at Ridgewood and leave a message. Messages will be checked daily. We will do our best to assist you.

Anyone can call 211 for assistance with housing, childcare, utility bills, or if you have health and safety questions or need any other resources. Help is available in several languages. You can also get help online at http://211.org/

The Oregon Food Bank is open. Check here for more information: https://www.oregonfoodbank.org/

All families can set up free internet access for 2 months through Comcast. Go here for details: https://www.internetessentials.com/ or call 1-855-846-8376.

Meals for Students

With no meals being available on Fridays, students will receive two meals on Thursdays.

Playground Closed

All Beaverton schools and buildings are closed and this includes our playgrounds, fields, and tracks. All outdoor gates have been locked in support of public health and to limit the spread of COVID-19. Due to limited staff we are unable to maintain safe fall zones at our play structures. Also, please note on Sunday, March 22, 2020, THPRD notified the community that their outdoor playgrounds and exercise equipment are closed to the public.

BOX TOPS COLLECTION GOES DIGITAL

The paper box top collection program has been discontinued by General Mill, so we are no longer collecting box tops at school. However, you can still earn money for Ridgewood; if you see the label below, simply use the new Box Tops app to scan your receipt. Box Tops are still worth the same amount and what’s great is the app will instantly add cash to the school’s earnings online. Find more info here.
