The Tiger's Roar

March 2023

Orange Grove Families,

What a great month it has been at The Grove! I want to start by congratulating our Middle School Robotics Team for winning the State Championship and as a result, earning a spot at the World Championship next month in Houston, Texas! This is an incredible accomplishment as OG was just one of two middle schools competing against 22 state high school robotics teams and will be one of two South Carolina schools competing in Texas. In Houston, they will spend the week competing against 191 teams from across the nation as well as 24 countries. Watch the Robotics Team in action as they train for Houston.

Orange Grove is committed to covering all of the costs associated with getting all 16 of our students and coaches to and from the competition but would love your help in doing so. Here is how you can get involved to support the team:

Enjoy $2 Extra Style Day Mondays.
Help get the team to Texas by sending your student in their style day best each Monday in April and early May (4/3, 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, & 5/8) for a donation of only $2 or more each day.

Make a donation to the team.

If you would like to make a donation in support of the Robotics Team, you can do so via RevTrak (please add “ROBOTICS” to the comments section).

Become a Robotics Business Sponsor.

Support the Robotics Team on the road to Houston and beyond by becoming a 2024 Business Sponsor! Donate $500 or more to support the team and your business will be featured on the team t-shirt and competition banner as well as Orange Grove’s website, social media, and online communication. To make a Business Sponsor donation, you can do so online via RevTrak (please include “ROBOTICS” in the comments section along with the name of your business).

By this time next week, we will have already begun our last quarter of the school year! We have so many fun activities planned for the 4th quarter. Do you want to be part of the fun on a daily basis? I am happy to make that dream come true for you. Simply click here to complete a quick Substitute Teacher Interest Form and let the fun begin.

Thank you for your continued support of The Grove!

5th graders shine at West Ashley concert

Last Thursday at West Ashley High School, five of our 5th grade Chorus members represented Orange Grove at the inaugural West Ashley Elementary Choral Festival. After attending weeks of extra practice with Mrs. Ferderigos, these students joined together with other members of West Ashley elementary school choral groups to provide a delightful evening of song that was free to the community.

Congratulations to these OG singers and Mrs. Ferderigos for a job well done (pictured L to R: EunYoung C., Heaveny P., Amelia S., Mrs. Ferderigos, Lauren C., and Ana R.)

Thank you to Mr. Wald, Choral Director, and the West Ashley High School Chorus for making this opportunity possible. To see more from this special night including a video of the concert, please check out CCSD's Fine Arts Office Facebook post.

National History Day brings success for 8th graders

Nineteen Orange Grove 8th grade students (pictured below with 8th grade Social Studies teacher Mrs. Gladu) competed at the National History Day regional competition last weekend in Bluffton, SC where they entered in all four categories (exhibit, website, documentary, and paper). Orange Grove performed exceptionally well, with thirteen students who placed first or second now having the opportunity to go on to the state competition on April 22nd in Sumter, SC. Way to go, Orange Grove!

We are excited to announce that the Book Fair will be open for family shopping on Tuesday, April 4 from 3 - 5:45 pm at the Elementary campus. Shop right after dismissal or before the PTO Meeting starts at 6 pm - it's up to you. A few things to keep in mind before shopping:
  • Shoppers will need to enter and exit through the outside library door.
  • Children must be accompanied by an adult.
  • eWallet, Cash, Checks, and Credit Cards are accepted.

We look forward to seeing you and your family on the 4th!

Volunteer at the Book Fair

Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to volunteer at the Book Fair. This event would not be possible without our enthusiastic and supportive Orange Grove volunteers. We still have a few volunteer spots that need to be filled, primarily at the Middle School.

March Athletes of the Month!

OG Athletics is happy to present the March Student Athlete of the Month Award to two students who excel all around. Both of these players have helped their baseball team to countless wins this season. Copeland N. (8th grade) and Caden B. (8th grade) led the OG Orange Team to a 3rd place finish in the MS Baseball League.

They both led the team in innings pitched and strikeouts. Coach Miller described them as pivotal players who loved to compete. Copeland (right) and Caden (left) continued to support and encourage their teammates even when they were not in the game. Congratulations to both of these students!

Keep up-to-date on Orange Grove athletics' game schedules, practice details, and more on our OG Athletics page!

....that over fifteen volunteers came to share more about their profession during Career Day earlier this month?

A huge thank you to the parents and community volunteers listed below who took time from their busy day to come in and speak with our 3rd-5th graders on our March 10th Career Day! The students had a great time learning about different careers and thinking about their own dreams for the future. Next up: we're looking forward to all the fun and excitement of Kindergarten - 2nd grade's Careers on Wheels Day headed our way on April 7th.

Celebrating Black History Month

During the month of February, our students across all grade levels participated in Black History Month with various projects and reports. We are excited to share the biography projects that our fifth graders worked so hard on in the video below. These students did a phenomenal job researching, writing, and presenting all about their famous African Americans.

National Biomechanics Day at the MUSC Stroke Rehabilitation Research Center

The Stroke Recovery Research Center (SRRC) currently supports 30 studies investigating stroke recovery processes. Our seventh grade students experienced a variety of machines and robots that help stroke victims rehab back into daily life such as ultrasound and ZeroG. Enjoy the recap of this hands-on field trip in the video below!

One thousand Orange Grove memories

Honoring the 100th day of school with a bit of a twist, each fifth grade student was asked to write down eight memories from their time at The Grove. What began with a few words on a heart shaped piece of paper bloomed into something even more special. Check out the video below and see how fifth grade took #WeLoveTheGrove to a whole new level!

Now Presenting: Second grade's Famous Americans

Our second graders did such an amazing job playing the role of teacher for this year’s famous Americans project. For this project, students chose their famous American, researched them, wrote a report, and finally dressed up and presented their selected American. Enjoy some highlights from this annual event at OG in the video below!

Parents/Guardians,

There are several illnesses currently going around. Please keep your child home if they are not feeling well. If they visit a Doctor and get a Doctor’s excuse, they must not return to school before the date of return listed. If they return to school before the day of return on the Doctor’s excuse, they will be sent home.

If your child has a fever, they must be fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medications (Ibuprofen/Tylenol) before they can return to school. A fever is defined at 100 degrees or higher.

Thank you for helping us keep our students and staff healthy!

6th Grade Parents / Guardians

South Carolina law requires that all students entering seventh grade receive one dose of Tdap vaccine. The Tdap vaccine protects children from three serious diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (often called whooping cough). If your child has already had the vaccine (this vaccine is usually administered at their 11 yr old well check), you must provide the school with proof that they have had it on an official DHEC Immunization form provided by their health care provider.

If your child hasn’t received the vaccine, please contact your health care provider to schedule an appointment. Once your child has received the vaccine, please remember that you must provide proof to the school nurse. Students entering the seventh grade who have not received the Tdap vaccine by the beginning of the next school year (Aug. 2023) will not be allowed to attend school until they have received the vaccine and provided proof to the school nurse.

If you have any questions, please contact our nurse at 843-852-7927 or email leah_mosqueda@orangegrovecharter.com.

For information about this vaccine click here.

Thank you,

Leah Mosqueda, RN
