RESILIENCE!

Our January Maverick Value is Resilience. In choosing it as a value, we looked at research on what determines success. In a study done by David Levin, research found that the best predictor of graduation from college was not IQ, not grades, not standardized test scores, and not income level. Instead, it was the possession of certain character traits. In Levin’s words: “They were the students [college graduates] who were able to recover from bad grades and resolve to do better next time; who could bounce back from unhappy breakups or fights with their parents; who could persuade their professors to give them extra help after class; who could resist the urge to go out to the movies instead of stay home and study.” In short, these students had solid character, and resilience was crucial.

Please see the story below on a young man who personifies Resilience.

9 DAYS FOR LIFE!

From January 17-25, let us join together with Catholics across the country to pray for a culture of life. See the link below for ways to do so.

Pope Francis's Trip to the Philippines

Pope Francis made a detour, went off his schedule, and had an encounter with street kids. See the article below. In case we ever wonder how we can evangelize, we can always look to the example of Jesus, and Pope Francis did so by being with the poor in the Philippines. See the article below about Pope Francis' encounter.

Another Proponent of the Growth Mindset

Fortune Magazine recently had an article on the importance of growth mindset, for everyone, not just children!
