Positive Raiders: Responsible, Respectful, Hard Working and Kind
This Week’s Positive Message: At the end of the first day of school, I read to students, “Good Afternoon Raiders! This is Mr. Corso, your principal. Each and every adult on campus is here to help you. If you need something, have a question, ask someone. We are all here to help you have a wonderful school year.”

PE - Students will begin dressing out for PE on Weds. 8/28. Students should bring their clothes and lock, before Wednesday, 8/26 to have a locker assigned. Students are expected to have their locker assignment, clothes, and lock before their PE class on Weds. 8/26.
ACADEMY PE - will begin classes on Monday, 8/26 following the 2:27 pm regular dismissal bell. Pick up for Academy Students will be 3:30 Monday-Thursday.
Pick Up and Drop Off: Students should be picked up and dropped off on BMMS’s campus. If you are picking up your Black Mtn. student from Sunset Hills, the area in front of the SHES MPR between the flagpole and the SHES east driveway will be designated for BMMS students as they wait for pick up. Students cannot be on their campus after 3:10pm. If a parent hasn’t picked up their student by 3:10pm, they will be escorted back onto the BMMS campus. We thank you for your support.
Proud to serve Black Mountain Students and Families,
Scott Corso
Principal
Our Dedication to Safety:
Each school year, our #1 Priority is SAFETY. We will be administering safety drills throughout the year. We will have search and rescue, fire and lockdown drills at various times. If an actual emergency occurs, we will communicate with our community as soon as it is safe to do so. Our first priority is to make sure our students and staff are safe, then we move to communicating with you. During our emergency, we may use certain terms related to the event. Here are a few of those terms and what they mean:
Lockdown: There is a danger on campus. All activity (including movement and instruction) on campus stops.
Secure Campus: The danger is off campus, but nearby. Instruction continues, but movement on campus stops.
Shelter in Place: The danger is an airborne contaminant. All people stay in doors. Instruction may continue.
We hope we never have to use these terms, but our school will be prepared if we need to.

Bus Loop in the Afternoon
In order to increase the safety of our students and buses, our buses are the one vehicles allowed in the loop loop in the afternoons from 2:00-2:40pm. No cars will be allowed to stop in the red zone curbs while buses are present. Cars coming into school for afternoon pickup will be directed into the parking lot. Once buses have left, the lane closest to school will open up. Please make the necessary adjustments. Thank you for your cooperation and support to make BMMS a safer school.

Mindful Minute
During the 2018-2019 school wide thought exchange survey, PUSD community members offered many ideas on how to best support our students. One of the concerns raised was our students’ social-emotional learning and mental health wellness. Many of you pointed out the need to help students reduce their stress and anxiety, and to help students deal with academic and social pressures.
One way we are doing this is by implementing a “Mindful Minute” each day to provide an opportunity to calm themselves and have a quiet moment to prepare for learning. Our current culture is filled with stimuli and input for the mind, from the time we wake up to the time we go to bed. A “Mindful Minute” allows our students a chance to pause and have silence to reflect upon the day ahead before starting the day. We are asking for your help in discussing the “Mindful Minute” with your children at home as well as possible topics or thoughts for them to focus on.
Research has shown that by participating in a quiet moment each day, students feel less anxious, less stressed, calmer, and more able to focus. This, in turn, improves learning as well as behavior at home and school.
For more information and FAQ’s visit our school website under Mindful Minute.
Robotics & FLL deadline 8/26
Is your student interested in Robotics? BMMS has two awesome options. For 6th - 8th Graders, FLL is a great, short season league where students build and program robots using Legos and Mindstorm. For 7th - 8th Graders, FTC is a more challenging, longer season league where students build and program robots using common materials and Java.
Applications are being accepted through Monday, August 26.
Please email your interest to:

FTC -- bmms.ftc.robotics@gmail.com
