Mrs. Petersen's Class News
Week of March 16, 2015
Happy March!
We are back into the swing of things in room 323! I have to admit... it took me a bit longer than I expected to get back into "school mode" after the inclement weather that we had! Nevertheless, we are back and enjoying the beginning of spring and learning about the new things that come with this beautiful season!
Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop, we have been reviewing ways to solve "tricky words" in our reading, with a focus on blends, diagraphs, vowel teams and "bossy r". Although this is a review for us, it comes at a time in the year where the children are growing in their reading levels and are faced with a whole new set of "tricky words".
This week, we will begin a new unit of study in Reader's Workshop! This week, we will begin a unit called "Reading Across the Genres". We will learn all about the many genres of books extending beyond fiction and non-fiction! We will study and learn all about mysteries, realistic fiction and science fiction just to name a few!

Math Workshop
In math workshop, we took some time to work on subtraction. We are continuing our work with addition and subtraction, however, we are now working on these skills within word problems! The children have become very good at first recognizing what type of problem it is, (start unknown, change unknown or end unknown) and then following the steps to solve the problem.
Writer's Workshop
In Writer's Workshop, we have been working on writing poetry and songs! The children have enjoyed writing acrostic and list poems and adding music to some of them to create songs!
Science
This week, we will begin our studies of "Plants" with the help of a wee little leprechaun! Be sure to ask your kids after Tuesday about the "magic" that the leprechaun gives to our class to kick-off our Plant unit!
