Job Description / Responsibilities

Bakers mix and bake ingredients to produce bread, rolls, cakes, pies, and other baked goods. Measuring and weighing ingredients to prepare dough, batter, and icings using scales and graduated cylinders is also included in this career. Other things they have to do are placing dough in pans, observing the color of products being baked, mixing ingredients, and checking equipment.

Education Needed

The required education for this career is a High School Diploma. It is also preferred that you have on the job experience. If you want to become a baker, you have the option of getting certification through the Retail Bakers of America. Certification shows that you have the skills and knowledge of working at a retail baking establishment. A certified baker must have 4 years of work experience. A master baker must have 8 years of work experience, 30 hours of sanitation course work, and 30 hours of professional developmental training.

Baking and culinary schools are excellent options when becoming a baker. The higher education you get, the more likely you are to succeed in becoming an entrepreneur baker.
