Term 2 Week 3 - 18 May

Big picture

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Here’s hoping all mums had a lovely day last Sunday!

A strong community is essentially something we all wish for or aspire to. But it needs us to make it real. There has been a lot of evidence here recently with much done to bring people together. There is a lot to both nurture and celebrate in this space, and the more of us who buy in, the better it is for all of us.

Congratulations to the Pre-Primary Catherine Gang who regaled us with their exploits this morning. Your assembly was such fun! Thank you so much.

Again, thanks to our HRC who organised the presentation on the resilient child on Tuesday. Some 70 people attended this relevant, interesting, and amusing presentation by Claire Orange.

Over 100 online canteen orders were taken on Wednesday - up from 31 the Wednesday before - fantastic! The link for online ordering can be found on the website.

Thought provoking FAQ is back in a lot of detail which you will see in this newsletter.

Thanks to our teachers of Year 6, Kate and Lachie who were at the Confirmation workshop supporting this parish based programme and supporting their children - much appreciated! More interesting Parish developments can be found in this newsletter that may be relevant for you.

Here’s to a lovely weekend – enjoy!

Best Wishes

Mark de Kluyver

For those of you who missed this after Mass on Friday – a tribute to our awesome Holy Rosary mums.

Dear Parents,

Over the past year or so we have received some interest from parents in having some technical control over their child’s iPad use. ZuluDesk, the new ‘Mobile Device System’ we use for managing the iPads at Holy Rosary has a parent option that allows parents to set restrictions on the school iPad for the apps and functions the students can use outside of school hours. We are looking at implementing this for parents from Yr 3-6, however, we would appreciate some parents to trial this software before we make it available to all parents. To date, eight families have registered their interest. If you are willing to volunteer please fill in the Google Form below.

Before you sign up, there is a short video for you to preview that explains how the App works if you wish to have a look. https://vimeo.com/212094116

After the trial period, we will also ask you to provide us with some feedback on your experience.

Library News

Book Fair has been a huge success and it’s not over yet! It closes at 4pm this afternoon (Friday) so there is still some time to come in and support our Library. Big thanks to our amazing Library Monitors who have been super busy and the amazing Mrs Monzu, Mrs Miniello and Mrs Mecham who gave up their Wednesday to set up the Fair – I’m sure you’ll agree it looks wonderful!! Thank you to all the parents who came in to help – these events wouldn’t happen without you and the students and I are most grateful. Before school on Thursday, 2 inaccurate EFT transactions were made. If you find it was you (from looking at your bank statement) please contact me via the office. Thanks and sorry. Chess, Book Club (group 3) and Borrowing will return next week so remember your library bags! Thank you so much for your support.

Following the survey undertaken by our Holy Rosary Community (HRC) last year, which asked what parents and guardians might see as priorities for them for 2018, there was discussion at HRC meetings that some were more in the domain of the school, and that it would be best for the school rather than the HRC to respond. So here’s a start, with more of the school focused suggestions being addressed regularly next term.

More sport – clubs before/after school. Many already exist, and are evident through the newsletter. Several are run by parents from Holy Rosary. Also, Rob Flexman, our teacher of Physical Education runs training sessions before interschool events, including arranging swimming training during the holidays. As children get a bit older the opportunities broaden. Rob also takes advantage of funding opportunities to run tennis sessions in sport time. The programme here is rich and varied.

Specialist Art Teachers. We don’t have one, instead focusing on Science, Music, Sport and Italian. Teachers, using the West Australian curriculum teach art with their class.

Music and Drama options. Now with a school band and school choir, plus the introduction of Edudance and Musica Viva, plenty has happened in this space.

More coding, getting children ready for the language of computers. The use of computers, and barrier games (remember Battleship? It is a form of coding!) and other activities sees this component of curriculum incorporated in to other learning areas and not treated as a discrete subject. This is an engaging and enjoyable space.

Improving School grounds with particular focus on the oval. A lot of work has been done here, both to the oval and the Dominican playground, and they started the year looking good, and still do! Both survived the Dads and Kids Camp Out as well as the Welcome Back Sundowner arranged by our HRC. Work continued last break with preparation for winter (coring in particular) completed.

Play areas accessible after hours. This continues again this year with children playing in the Dominican playground after school until 3.30 when it becomes the premise of our OSHC. This is fine to continue as long as children are actively supervised.

Contemporary classrooms. As of February these are now evident across our school. Staff have had many opportunities to undertake professional reading and to learn from one another to be able to best use their reimagined classrooms in ways which maximise the engagement of our children in their learning.

Home Readers. A great deal of money has been spent on the reading resources across the school – more than $22 000 over the last two years, with combined funding from the HRC and the school. Upgrading of readers continues as funds become available because we know that they get hammered!

The brand new 2018 | 2019 Entertainment Memberships are here and NOW is the time to get your membership.. especially as the old 2017-18 memberships will expire at the end of May!

Support Holy Rosary and order your Entertainment book via the following link:

Books are arriving this week. For those that have ordered they should be ready for collection from Monday 21st May 2018. An email will be sent in regards to collection.

Entertainment books are available in the hard copy book form or a DIGITAL membership.

Digital memberships are an app that is downloaded on to your device. I’ve had both and have found the digital membership is fantastic, extremely convenient and easy to use. A digital membership can be connected to at least 2 phones (possibly more if you contact entertainment book to request an increase in device numbers). The digital version also has updates and NEW offers constantly sent to your phone. And most people tend to take their phone everywhere… so you never forget to take the entertainment book with you.

Did you also know there is a WHOLE section in the Entertainment book on BALI!! If you’re planning a trip there it’s worth getting. You can take advantage of discounts and offers on various hotels, accommodation and restaurant offers all in Bali!

Don’t delay – ORDER YOURS TODAY!

Are you a young person looking for ways to get involved in Sunday Mass? Are you interested in reading, being an altar server, bringing forward the offertory or being part of the music ministry team? The last Sunday of every month at 5.30pm will be our very own Youth Mass, where we will have the opportunity to serve the different parts of the Mass. Pizza and soft drink will be provided after Mass as a way of meeting other young people in our parish. The first Mass is scheduled for Sunday 27th May, if you are interested in helping contact Simon Martino at martino_simon@hotmail.com. Looking forward to seeing you there!
