Knights in Progress
Knights in Progress attended mentor training and a team building workshop at UCI which entailed obstacle courses, high rope activities, trust exercises, and mentor training. The new mentors bonded as a group as they had to rely on each other to complete both physical and mental tasks. Advisor, Jeff Bonds, Julie McGinis, and John Emaguna then reviewed the responsibilities and confidentiality requirements for Knights in Progress. The mentors will be matched up with their freshmen mentees at the end of the month. It is going to be a great group of student participants and we are excited about the positive outcomes of this year’s student mentoring program.
FHS English Department Celebrates Successful Student Assessment Data and Plans for 2017-18
After engaging in deliberate, meaningful, and reflective collaboration over the last two years, the FHS English Department has seen unparalleled growth in student performance on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress Exam or CAASPP, taken by 11th grade students, as well as its site-created Mini-CAASPP for 9th and 10th grade students. Boasting the highest increase in scores on the exam in Tustin Unified, FHS students benefitted from the commitment of English teachers who used formative assessments and collaboration time to determine essential skills students needed to become more college ready. Joanne McDermott and Josh Hermanson, the co-chairs of the department, described the process as “simply reaffirming our departmental commitment to working together and ensuring all students have the same opportunities to succeed”. Here they are working in grade-level teams in the days prior to the school year beginning.

FHS Girls Golf vs. El Modena High Wins First Match of the Year!

For a second year, 17-year-old Madeline Salvatierra has created a free five-day summer camp at the Orange County Rescue Mission to help young children explore careers of the future.
"Extra curricular activities really help you find your passion and then inspire you to pursue a career," says Salvatierra. "But a lot of kids, especially at Orange County Rescue Mission, don't typically get those opportunities."
That's why Madeline has designed the entire curriculum, focused on activities and fun exercises that might spark interest in certain job fields, and she's been encouraged by the kids' enthusiastic response.
"Today, the kids made tin foil boats and learned about engineering," says the Foothill High School senior. "They made little microwavable cakes in cups and learned about food chemistry."
Salvatierra started this program as part of a Girl Scouts project, but it has now grown into so much more. During each day of camp there are two guest speakers, including nurses, scientists, artists and others. Several teens volunteering with the Assistance League of Tustin also help out with the camp.
Madeline, You Are A Wonderful Model For All Of Us!

Pre-Game Rally for Our Foothill vs Tustin Football Game
Here is a BIG THANK YOU from our Activities Directors:
We wanted to take a moment and thank all of you for your participation and support for Foothill High School and Tustin High School Pre-Game and Football Game. I don’t take it lightly that the Tustin-Foothill game is one of the most well-attended event in the community and there are so many people involved to making the night go well and you all are the ‘unsung heroes’ of our community and without your willingness to sacrifice blood (yes – we had some bleeding last night), sweat, and tears (mostly by us), this night would not have been a success for both schools. From the presales that went on at both schools, to the school time rallies at both sites, to the pre-game tailgates, and finally to actual game festivities, there was a lot to be proud of in Tustin Unified.
So, from the bottom of our heart, thank you and great job!

Fine Arts Commissioner Report – By Shannon Cleary
The arts had great week last week! The biggest highlight was the amazing performance by the marching band at Friday night's big game. The audience was in awe of the amazing music played by the marching band during halftime. Foothill students also really enjoyed a performance by the drummers of marching band at break on Friday during the first rally run! If anyone is interested in checking out the amazing talents of the Advanced Theatre Arts class, swing on by the little theater to see the photos of the amazing actors! The madrigals choir are headed to choir camp this weekend which is a very important time for them to grow as a choir as well as bond! All arts classes are continuing to work hard and are looking forward to the rest of the year.
