Newsletter Week 3 Term 2 2022

St Joseph's Catholic School Morrinsville - MAY 17th

Principal's Message

Kia ora Koutou,

It was so great to be able to open our doors and invite other schools into our kura. The Literacy Quiz went off today with a bang and our children loved the competition. Tomorrow Emma Hyde and Kerry Horan are hosting groups of teachers from our other Catholic Schools discussing innovative learning spaces. This kind of onsite access hasn't taken place for a while, but now that we are in orange level, we can! We also invite our parents and caregivers to come into our school as well. Our only requirement is that a mask is to be worn. We look forward to seeing you.

Term 2 and Term 3 is winter uniform time. Everyone must be in full winter uniform by Monday 16 May. Thank you for organising this for our children. We do have a reasonable selection of items available in our second hand section so feel free to check it out!

The artwork, “Holy Mary, Mother of God, Assumed into Heaven” in our parish today, Tuesday: 5pm Rosary, 5.30pm Mass in Morrinsville. You are welcome to view it.

Have a fantastic week, take care and God bless.

EPro8 2022 - Well Done

Well done to our four teams of talented students who attended the regional EPro8 Challenge last week at Morrinsville Intermediate. The teams were made to think outside the square as they raced against the clock to complete tasks. Our Year 5's were placed 9th, Year 6's placed 4th, Year 7's placed 8th and Year 8's placed 2nd. We wish our Year 8 team all the best as they now go through to the Grand Final in Hamilton next month.

The EPro8 Challenge is an inter-school science and engineering competition. Every year over 10,000 students from 800 schools throughout New Zealand take part. Students are challenged to complete a series of challenges designed to promote science and engineering. A great skill to have.

Waikato Catholic Interschools Literacy Quiz

Once again Mr Bennett has organised an amazing event. Today we had 24 teams from eight schools competing for the top title. The quiz consists of 100 questions based on novels and picture books. Jeff started this event five years ago as a way of preparing for the Waikato Literacy Quiz that takes place each year. The event keeps growing and blossoming. Thank you so much Mr B! Results will be available shortly.

Congratulations to our core value certificate recipients. You are shining!

Taku Wairua

Yesterday our year 5 and 6 students had a visit from local police as part of the self esteem programme 'Taku Wairua.' The children were able to interview our police asking questions about the role through to goals and challenges. What a great way to start the week! We even had some people in handcuffs but lucky the key was handy!

Refreshed Religious Education Curriculum

Last week Jemma Van Eijk, myself, John Assen and Jessica Van Leeuwen (Board members) attending a professional development opportunity on the progress of the refreshed RE curriculum that is currently being designed. There are such great resources being made and so much work has gone into thinking about what makes us Catholic.
