Weekly Report for September 29, 2023

Tiger Nation:

We have completed the first quarter of the school year. Progress report grades will be posted this afternoon. Please take some time to discuss your child’s current grades and progress as well as establish some goals for the final quarter of the first semester.

GHS will be on Fall Break from October 2nd - 13th. Students and staff will return to campus for the start of the second quarter on Monday, October 16th.

Congratulations to the following Gilbert Accelerated Middle School Choir Students for making the AZ STATE Cantaremos Honor Choir: Mons Larson, Landon Mariner, Charlee Farr and Ketziah Joseph. These students prepared and submitted an audition and competed against students in grades 7- 9 across the State!

Congratulations to the Gilbert Tiger Pride Marching Band for their recent first place finish in their competition at Highland High School! They received top scores for Division 2 in the areas of Music, General Effect, Visual and Percussion. Saturday, September 30th, the band will be competing in the Basha Marching Invitational.

Congratulations to GHS Senior Gabriel Lopez. He was recognized at the GPS Governing Board Meeting this past week for being named a National Merit Semifinalist!

Congratulations to the 134 GHS students that earned a passing score (3 or higher) on an Advanced Placement Exam last year. They all received an AP Yard Sign to celebrate this outstanding achievement!

Congratulations to the Gilbert High School Boys’ Golf team for winning their multi-meet at the Mesa Country Club on Tuesday September 26th. They topped Chandler, Coronado, and Apache Junction High Schools.

Fall Break is a great opportunity for students to expand and improve their literacy skills by taking time to relax and find something fun to read. Independent reading has been shown to improve comprehension as well as increase vocabulary.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support of Gilbert High School!

GHS is a CLOSED CAMPUS

Gilbert High School is a closed campus. This means that students are not permitted to leave campus during their school day. Once students arrive on campus, they are required to stay through their last scheduled class period. Students will not be allowed to leave unless a parent physically comes in to sign their student out. Please plan appointments accordingly.

Students that drive may not access their vehicle during their school day.

We appreciate your support in keeping our students safe.

Graduation Tracker

Parents and students can use the Graduation Tracker tool in the Infinite Campus portal to see if your student is on track for graduation. This tool will show the credits a student has earned and the credits the student has planned for future years.

Freshmen students will not have any credits shown in the Graduation Tracker until the end of the first semester. Once freshmen have completed their 4-year plan with their counselor during Freshman visits in September, the credits and classes planned for future years will show up in the tracker.

Please Login to your Infinite Campus Portal to access the Graduation Tracker:

Opportunity for GHS Juniors

Does your 11th grader want to travel the world this summer? The 2024 Gilbert Sister Cities Youth Ambassador Program is the program for them! Gilbert Sister Cities is a nonprofit organization that offers Juniors in Gilbert a chance to host an exchange student in their homes and travel for free to either of our sister cities in China or Northern Ireland.

In addition to providing an opportunity for students to visit Leshan, China, or Antrim-Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland (all for free next summer), the 2024 Youth Ambassador Program will include workshops on essay writing, fundraising, interviewing, and networking. Taught by local business leaders, these clinics will help participants develop skills that will help them with the college admission process, scholarship applications/interviews, job interviews, and in the workforce itself.

Participants will have a variety of opportunities to practice what they have learned during group and individual interviews, social events, and fundraisers.

Please visit our website at: gilbertsistercities.org, and visit our Facebook and Instagram @gilbertsistercities for more information. If you have any questions, please email lori.schuermann@gilbertsistercities.com.

Valedictorian and Salutatorian Selection

To give all students an equal opportunity to become their school's valedictorian or salutatorian, Gilbert Public Schools will use the following guidelines:

  • Class rank will be used to determine the Valedictorian/Salutatorian distinction. In addition, recognition will be made for students who are in the top 1% of their class. Weighted classes will be included when determining class rank and will be identified on a student's transcript.
  • Foreign exchange students will not be eligible for the valedictorian or salutatorian position.
  • Mid-year graduates will not be eligible for the valedictorian or salutatorian position.
  • The valedictorian and salutatorian must have taken a minimum of twelve and one-half (12.5) credits (25 semester courses) at the high school from which they are graduating and must be enrolled in a minimum of five (5) class periods (full time status) per semester.

Students who are interested in competing for the valedictorian or salutatorian position are encouraged to discuss this process with their school counselor.

SAVE THE DATE!

PSAT and Late Start Information

Gilbert Public Schools will be administering the PSAT/NMSQT© to all currently enrolled 10th grade students free of cost on Tuesday, October 24th. Additionally, any 11th grade students who previously registered and paid to participate will also take the exam on this date and time.

The PSAT/NMSQT opens doors to college. Its unique benefits include free, personalized practice; college application fee waivers; scholarship opportunities; increased access to AP courses; and much more.

October 24th, 2023 will be a Late Start Day for students in grades 9, 11, 12. All students enrolled in grade 10 are eligible for the PSAT/ NMSQT administration and will arrive at school at the normal start time. Transportation will be provided on this day for all students who normally ride buses.
