Who Gets It?

Is this disease or condition genetic? Is it inherited from your family?

Yes obesity can be genetic. Obesity can be directly caused by diseases like Bardet-Biedl syndrome and Prader-Willi syndrome. It is also caused by eating too much

Who is at greatest risk?

People who are at greatest risk of becoming obese are non-hispanic white women and hispanic men.

Where is this disease or condition commonly found? (Specific countries; specific locations, ie:cities, farms, factories, etc.)

Obesity is most common in the U.S.A. because of all the fast food restaurants, fast paced lifestyle and processed foods.

How is it Diagnosed?

One way that obesity is diagnosed is by BMI (Body Mass Index). BMI is based on your weight and height that measures if your too skinny, normal, overweight or obese. BMI doesn't take into account the weight of your muscles or body type, therefore may not be 100% accurate.

Is it fatal? How can you Cure it?

You can possibly die from being to overweight. Some ways to make sure that this doesn't happen is to lower your calorie intake. Eat fish once a week, eat vegetables and try to eat less fried foods. Baking, grilling or broiling is healthier. Physical exercise is also very important. More intense workouts are better, but if you can't do that, start off slow. If working out is to much pressure on your joints, try doing things such as swimming, walking or exercises where you sit down. You should also try to eat different types of foods instead of eating the same thing over and over.
