Delay, Cancelation & Adjustment
Monday, March 13, 2023
Unfortunately, due to additional weight created this weekend from snow and rain, combined with the already existing extreme amounts of snow, there will be impacts at three of our school sites tomorrow, Monday, March 13, 2023, due to snow load concerns and in an abundance of caution. This will allow our facilities team and outside contractors to continue addressing ongoing building maintenance needs.
As mentioned in our communication on Friday, the TTUSD maintenance and facilities team has been regularly monitoring snow loads and tirelessly removing snow and cornices from schools’ roofs. Throughout the weekend, our team surveyed all TTUSD facilities and discovered a few sections where snow loads must be reduced before opening. These efforts are made to ensure safe environments for our students and staff. Safety will always remain our top priority and the most essential criteria for our decision-making.
The three schools affected are Truckee Elementary School, Tahoe Lake Elementary School, and Truckee High School. Below is information on each school site and their operational modifications for Monday, March 13, 2023.
Truckee Elementary - Closed
Unfortunately, with the recent rain and snow accumulations this past weekend, despite removing significant portions of snow last week, the snow load has once again exceeded snow load ratings on older portions of the Truckee Elementary building.
Due to this, Truckee Elementary School will be closed tomorrow, Monday, March 13, 2023.
Our maintenance team will continue to work on snow removal, and we anticipate being able to welcome students back into a safe environment on Tuesday, March 14th.
Tahoe Lake Elementary - 2-Hour Delayed Start
There are currently two areas of the Tahoe Lake Elementary building that will be reassessed Monday morning, March 13. They include the area that e that houses the Library, the Little Auditorium, two classrooms, and offices, and the upper building that houses 3rd-5th grades and two learning centers. These areas were shoveled over the weekend and are still not currently over their snow load ratings, but need to be reassessed Monday morning after the forecasted rain and snowfall Sunday evening, March 12.
Due to this, Tahoe Lake Elementary School will be on a 2-Hour Delayed Start tomorrow, Monday, March 13, 2023. All classes will begin at 10:15 am, and the schedule can be found on our website. You can additionally find the Master Bus Stop List, which includes pick-up times. Buses will run on regular routes but will pick students up two hours later than normal.
If tonight’s storm pushes snow loads above safe levels, the classes and programs in the areas of concern at Tahoe Lake will be moved to other areas on campus. If anything changes and we cannot have school safely in session, Tahoe Lake families will be notified as early as possible on Monday morning.
Truckee High School - Open with Modifications
Truckee High School will be open on a regular schedule. However, there will be a few portions of the building clearly delineated and sectioned off to allow crews to continue removing snow.
This year our community has seen an exceptional amount of snow within a short window. It has certainly caused major disruptions to our school year, and we share your concerns regarding the impacts on our learners. Please know no one wants students back in schools more than the TTUSD staff. We e do not take these decisions lightly. However, safety will always remain at the forefront of all decisions.
With the option of digital learning being discontinued by the state of California, we are exploring options to provide students with learning resources during snow days in the future and will continue to keep you posted.
We understand your expressed concerns and want to assure you we are aware and listening. We are actively working to remedy any situations arising from the recent snow storms as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.
