Week of April 29, 2019
- As readers, we finished reading our same books with a partner. The experience has definitely helped our readers read more fluently, depict figurative language more easily, and practice stop and jot skills.
- To kick off our next unit of Reading ~ Reading Book Series, we read and discussed the first book of The Stories Julian Tells. While reading same series books, we will study story characters to see how they change and stay the same in each book in the series.
Writers' Workshop~
- During Writers' Workshop, we continued working on our Opinion Award Letters. We peer edited with a buddy to offer Stars and Wishes for our partner. Stars are the things we liked about their letter and Wishes are things we would like to know more about.
- We also learned how to write a good conclusion for our letters so the judges will award our book the specific award we devised. Stay tuned for our Red Carpet Award Ceremony!
Mathematicians~
- First, we reviewed and practiced dividing rectangles in to equal numbers of squares or cubes without using a geometric square or base-10 cube. We learned that if a box needs to be divided into 4 equal rows we would draw 2 horizontal lines and if the box has 5 equal columns, we would draw 4 equally spaced vertical lines. Rule: However many sections you need, draw 1 less line. Another tip we learned is to first draw notches marking where we want to draw the lines before actually drawing them so you can be sure they are equally space out ~ using our best visible judgement.
- As mathematicians, we learned about arrays. Arrays need to have an equal number of rows and an equal number in each row. For example, an array can have 3 rows with 4 in each row. The number of rows is the same as the number of groups... so for this example, we would have 3 groups with 4 in each group.
- We also learned how to use number stories to make picture models of an array. Then, we wrote an addition statement with a coordinating multiplication statement for each. For example, if a classroom has 5 rows of desks with 3 desks in each row, the addition number model would be 3+3+3+3+3= 15 and the multiplication number model would be 5 x 3=15.
- To enhance our array and multiplication skills, we learned a game called Array Concentration. The game rules are the same as concentration; however, the playing cards consist of arrays that you need to match with the coordinating number card.
Science~
- As Geologists, we ventured outside and collected soil from various areas of the First Grade playground and outside garden.
- We observed the "outdoor" soil and made comparisons to the homemade soil we previously made.
- Then, we added water to our outdoor soil and shook the vial. We will compare the settled homemade and outdoor vial mixtures in a few days.
- Thank you to Mrs. Gaul and her team of volunteers, we visited our school garden and completed some fun activities: Planted vegetables in the second grade garden bed, went on a scavenger hunt, and created a plant stick craft!
- Our Monarch Butterfly caterpillars arrived! We learned that caterpillars eat a food called mallow. Mallow comes from the mallow plant. We had the opportunity to supply mallow for our group's caterpillar. We look forward to watching and learning the life cycle of a Butterfly.
- We learned that Entomologists are Scientists who study insects. As entomologists, we learned that caterpillars need food, water, and air to survive. We also learned that Monarch caterpillars eat mallow. Mallow is a moist, substance that comes from the mallow plant. Some of us even touched the mallow as we relocated our caterpillars into their new home!
Social Studies~
- To prepare for our Walking Tour to Greenfield Hall, we started learned about the history of Haddonfield. We compared and contrasted how Haddonfield has stayed the same and how our city has changed over time.
Other Activities~
- Ethan Fitzgerald was our Star Student of the Week. We enjoyed learning more about Ethan!
- To welcome us back from Spring Break, the Student Council held an ALL School Morning Meeting. We learned a greeting, had a group share, and then completed a fun activity.
- Thank you to Mrs. Gaul for organizing a Garden Visit for our class. We planted some vegetables and flowers in the garden beds and enjoyed spending time making our garden amazing! Thank you to all the parents who were able to assist us during our garden adventure!
- We painted our clay beads...wait until you see our finished creations!

Hi Haddonfield, This week in school we… We went outside to do science and to eat snack and to play outside after snack we never play after snack! In science we dug deep to find dirt and wants we found the dirt we put the dirt into the cup without getting our hands dirty because we used a fancy spoon.Last, me, as in Olivia, and Charlie Wrote our names on a post it note then wrote where you found all the dirt so Charlie wrote rock wall I didn't do it because I did not know the rock wall was called at the time. After that we eat snack I had the snack mix. Then we 2mu played outside and I learned that recess is part of learning.Because at recess you learn how to be nice to others and share and to get all the noises out. Also at school we...At PE we learned and played Gaga .We Learned that Gaga means touch touch. In the game you are in this big cube with a ball if the ball touches your knee caps and down you are out if you use the same hand twice you are out if it goes out out of the corat you are out and if the ball touches somebody's head you are out finally in our school but only at our school this isn’t a rule but if you use the equipment improperly you lose the privilege and can’t use it any more. Any questions so take some time to think……..JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!As your job as being a grown up is that you know you can’t ask a COMPUTER questions!!! Something! I mean it is a COMPUTER!!!
