Are the kids all right?
Dear Cougar Family,
I am excited to welcome you all back from what I hope has been a restful and rejuvenating Spring Break!
I also wanted to thank you all for your leadership and support during our Shattered Dreams program on Thursday and Friday before the break. If we can prevent even one Cougar from making choices that negatively impact his/her own future or the future of others, then the program was well worth the time. Based on the faces I saw in the gym on Friday, I believe the impact was much wider than just one Cougar. Our students represented us well on all counts, so much so that this is a passage from an email I received from a community member over the break, "The College Station High School students were some of the most courteous, respectful, and attentive young people with whom we’ve had the opportunity to interact. It was a real pleasure getting to work with them and envision the bright futures they have as leaders in their chosen fields and communities. They are great examples of all the good that lies in our young people today."
This is the completed video created by Mr. Green and his students for those who were not here or who could not see well in the gym. Thanks to all who made this event a success!
During the break, this article--"In High School, the Kids are Not All Right"-- floated across my feed and stopped me in my tracks. Written by an educator, it takes an honest look at all that teenagers are facing today and what we can do to support them.
This passage in particular resonated with me: "Based on my observations, the lives of the high school students I teach are hemmed in everywhere by social pressures and expectations: high-stakes testing, the looming shadow of college admissions, the fiercely competitive school system, the painful process of figuring out who you are, and the ubiquitous desire for peer acceptance. Add to this the unseen pressures—fractured or fragmented home lives, emotional or physical violence and abuse, struggles with substance use, legal problems, and the wide range of issues borne by the many immigrant communities across the country—and it makes for a period of unsustainable emotional distress."
Please take a moment this week to read this article. Consider the tips presented in the article--such as setting office ours and pruning assignments for struggling students. Think about the students in your class. Who is not all right? Who may need to have help with their basic needs? (Remember, we have an on campus food pantry and access to Chrissy's closet.) Who may need to be referred to their counselor for a well-check visit? Who might benefit from knowing when your "office hours" are, so they can just stop by without having to make an appointment to ask for help?
Thank you for all you do to take care of Cougars both academically and socially/emotionally. I am so proud to get to return to work with the best high school staff in the state this week! See you soon!
As always, COUGAR PRIDE!
Tiffany
P.S.--We will not have a March faculty meeting, so use that time to complete your ProEthica modules! Make sure you have the April 2nd professional learning day on your calendar as well.
