Hampton Bays Middle School
Monday Memo #23
Asking Questions...
Dear T.E.A.M. :
For those who read this memo regularly, you've noticed how it's evolved over the last two years. It's always been centered on what's best in middle school and for adolescents. And now it's shifting in a direction that supports best practices in instruction, and how we can grow as educators, by focusing on teaching AND on learning.
Asking good questions in the classroom is one of the most important thing a highly effective teacher does. But I wonder if we ask ourselves and one another enough questions, often enough?
For example, I enjoy reading articles, specific to our work in middle school. But it's important for me to walk away with a question, after reading. This, I've found, allows me to continue to contemplate the contents of the article and it also encourages me to keep asking questions of myself, as an educator.
Do you do that too? If not, this week is your chance to try it out. Below, you'll see seven questions, with a related article. Check one or all of these out and see how it impacts your reflective practice this week, how you teach, and how your students learn.
Let me know which article resonated with you. Let's sit down and talk about it, or invite me into your classroom to see something you're trying out, in action. The only thing better than learning...is learning...together.
As always, I appreciate all you do, for our middle school students and our program.
Let's have a great week.
Sincerely,
Dennis
