St Jerome's Newsletter
Week 9 - Term 3 (Thursday 19 September 2019)
Dear Parents and members of our school community
Who Am I?
I am a person like no one else in the world.
I am the people I have met.
I am the experiences I have had.
I am the mistakes I have made
and the wisdom I have gained from them.
I am the lessons I have learned
and the ones I have given.
I am the good times in my life
and the bad ones too.
I am the emotions I have felt
and the thoughts I have thought.
God, I am the life I have lived.
Although it's not a perfect one,
understand that I'm doing the best I can
with what you have given me.
Because all that I have to work with.... is me.
ROAD SAFETY & COURTESY
Once again, I ask that anyone collecting children after school from the drive through to follow the road rules and most importantly keep the safety of the children and pedestrians at the forefront of your driving. Slow down as you enter the school parking area & be very vigilant of families especially children walking through.
Recently, I have had several complaints from angry local residents about the lack of regard of some parents to the road rules which I cannot and will not defend.
This is also related to a complete disregard for other people’s property by parking on the verges, including over near the corner of Rockingham Road and Marvel Avenue, particularly the grass patch by the Puma service station and the grass patch outside the pre-school, on Marvel Avenue.
I am working closely with the Cockburn Council to see how we can strengthen the safety of all in this area and the Parking Inspector will be making regular checks.
LOST PROPERTY
A big reminder please, to label all your children’s belongings clearly. We have had an overwhelming amount of lost property handed into the office i.e hats, drink bottles, lunch containers and school jackets. Please also label those very expensive drink bottles and food containers. With Sports Carnival on tomorrow, it is SO IMPORTANT that you label hats, jackets & water bottles as we always have so many items left behind.
NAPLAN YEARS 3 & 5 INDIVIDUAL STUDENT REPORTS
The school has received individual student reports from the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). We are still waiting on the analysis data. Once this has arrived, the individual Student Reports will be sent home with your child/children. We are hoping that this will occur early next week.
2020 Class Placements
Around about this time each year decisions are made regarding class placements for the following year. Factors which are taken into account when balancing classes include academic ability, gender, social and emotional needs and religious affiliation. In addition, children with behavioural problems and those with special needs are also accommodated.
Parental requests become an additional factor and I would like to make clear our policy on this issue. Letters to or lobbying of class teachers will not be considered. Because of the many other factors involved in balancing classes, parental requests can only be met in exceptional circumstances. If you believe that such circumstances apply to your child, a request must be made in writing by Friday 20 September. No requests can be met after this date. Please do not ask your child for their preferred teacher as this does not constitute an exceptional circumstance. Neither is the placement of a child in a class without their current best friend. When writing your request, please indicate the reason for the request. This is your opportunity to explain in writing your exceptional circumstance. Unsubstantiated requests will be ignored.
Please note my secretary will ring you to confirm receipt of your letter, however, I will not be conducting interviews with parents regarding class placement, nor will I be replying to letters of request.
Meeting new and different people is a fact of life and it is our role as parents and teachers to support them through change rather than protect them from it. I am confident that the teachers put a great deal of thought into the new class lists and I ask you to trust that the environment your child is going to next year is one in which they will thrive.
Principal
Global Rosary for Schools
Last year on the 7th October 2018, the world prayed the Rosary in 56 countries on six continents, including Australia. They all ‘united’ in a Global Rosary to publicly pray the Rosary for our country and the world.
In Australia there were over 200 locations in all states praying the Rosary in churches and in over 100 schools and other locations.
This will take place again on Sunday 13th October 2019, on the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. The countries of the World Wide Global Rosary will again pray for world peace, penance and reparation for the world.
The Schools’ Rosary will be held on Thursday 27th September (due to school vacation dates differing in various states). At St Jerome’s we will encourage all classes to say the Rosary over the day, one decade at a time in honour of Our Lady.
Australia’s intentions are: protection of the country and her people, priests and religious, sanctity of life and marriage, the consecration of the country to the Immaculate Heart of Mary and for the country to live out its calling as the Great Southland of the Holy Spirit.
We encourage all our families to take time after your evening meal on the 27th September to pray a decade of the Rosary together.
St Jerome's Day
Parents are warmly invited to attend the St Jerome’s mass beginning at 9am on Friday 27 September.
A variety of fun activities have been arranged for our students to participate in between recess and lunch time. All students will be provided with a sausage sizzle and an ice cream for lunch on St Jerome’s day. If your child does not eat a Sausage Sizzle then please send along an alternative lunch as no other food will be available from the canteen that day.
The St Jerome’s Talent Quest will begin in the hall at 1:30pm. We look forward to seeing you there to end the term.
Plastic Bottle Tops Collection
Envision Hands – Collection of Plastic Bottle Tops
Thank you for the many bottle tops dropped into the school for Envision Hands.
To assist in the Envision Hands Project please help by ensuring only clean bottle tops from soft drink, water and milk bottles are the only tops recycled. The plastic ring can be recycled too! Although Envision does try to recycle any plastic it receives, at present their operations can’t fully process these other items.
This is an ongoing project and your tops are happily accepted by dropping them into the box in the front office.
Thank you!

Uniform Shop News
Don’t forget, next term it’s back to school wearing summer uniform. Our shop will be open on the pupil free day, Monday 14th October from 8.15am to 3.30pm. For our Kindy and Pre-Primary children this could be a good time to get uniform sorted for transitioning into Pre-Primary and Year 1 next year, avoiding the rush in January when everyone else attends the shop and the busier times toward the end of the year.

St Jerome’s Spelling Bee!
We will be running the St Jerome’s Spelling Bee in Week 1 of Term 4, which is open to all Year 4-6 students. Children that are interested would have received the words electronically from their class teacher. They also have the option of receiving a paper copy if they prefer.
Class and Year level finals will be held in Week One of Term 4. The three winners from each year level will represent St Jerome’s at the South of the River Interschool Spelling Bee on Thursday the 31st of October.
Many thanks,
Mrs Natalie Paatsch - Extension
