21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
Well folks, we are one week away from winter break and just under two weeks away from opening presents! ... as long as we've all been good this year :)
One of my favorite songs this time of year is by legendary American singer, comedian and actor Bing Crosby. See if you can guess which one it is ...
I'm cheering for the Hobart Brickies
Just like the teams we used to know ...
Where the purple & gold glisten
And student athletes listen
To hear a referee whistle blow ...
Ok, maybe it isn't his famous recording of White Christmas, but let's stick with this for a few more lines ...
May your days be merry and fine ...
And may all your Brickies SHINE!!
What can I say, it's my favorite time of the year! Speaking of favorite times ... it's time for BricksCenter!
On Thursday, Hobart welcomed the Red Devils to the Friendly City to open the Northwest Crossroads Conference season! Predicted to bring home a 7th straight crown in 2020-2021, the Brickies left little doubt regarding the plan to deliver some additional hardware to the trophy case with a CONVINCING VICTORY over Lowell 60-21!! Hobart won by fall in 8 out of 12 varsity matches and earned forfeit wins in the remaining TWWWOOOOOOOO!! 5 Brickies made quick work with their Red Devil counterpart by registering a 1st-period pin! Let's face it, Thursday was a GREAT NIGHT TO BE A BRICKIE!!
Getting six for the Brickies were the following:
Junior Trevor Schammert @ 113 lbs (won by forfeit)
Senior Jaden Skimehorn @ 120 lbs (won by forfeit)
Junior Ruben Padilla @ 126 lbs (1st period)
Senior Cristian Padilla @132 lbs (1st period)
Sophomore Trevor Triana @138 lbs
Senior Tyler Turley @160 lbs (1st period)
Junior Jacob Simpson @ 182 lbs (1st period)
Junior Justin Sawyer @ 195 lbs
Junior Ryan Flores @ 220 lbs (1st period)
Senior Bobby Babcock @ 285 lbs
Saturday morning, our boys traveled west on 73rd over to Merrillville for the Tom Cameron Invitational. Thanks to COVID, the Brickies would not be able to defend their 2019-2020 championship ... a reduced number of teams and revamped format prevented an overall champion from being crowned. Still, any day that Hobart gets to strap on headgear is a good day and Saturday provided some strong early season tests for our boys! Opponents on the day were FW Carroll, Plymouth, and NCC foe Highland.
In a tough match to start the morning, FW Carroll squeaked by the Brickies 33-32 in a grueling battle. Our boys responded well with DOMINATING victories over both Plymouth and Highland to finish 2-1 for the tournament.
Overall, the Brickies are 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in NCC action! Hobart will be back at it TWWWOOOOOOOO more times this week with a home contest against Andrean on Wednesday and the annual Super Duals on Saturday! DON'T STOP NOW BOYS!!
Check out this short HIGHLIGHT ZONE video by Coach Cook!
Tuesday night, Hobart hit the road to square off with Illiana Christian in non-conference action. The Lady Vikings came out of the locker room ON FIRE and torched our girls in the 1st quarter to go up 10-2 after 8 minutes of play. In the 2nd, the Lady Brickies poured some water on the hot-shooting Vikes with some lock-down D-D-D-DEFENSE and found some FIRE of their own on the offensive end ... roaring back to take a 19-16 lead going into halftime!! The 3rd quarter was back-and-forth as neither team could gain much advantage, but over the final 8 minutes, Hobart exerted its collective will on both ends of the floor and earned a HARD FOUGHT 41-28 VICTORY!! SUPER SOPHOMORE Asia Donald had a MONSTER GAME as she registered a DOUBLE-DOUBLE with 32 points & 16 rebounds!! Junior Melanie Leonard grabbed 10 boards as well to help Hobart secure the win!
On Friday, the Lady Brickies were again ROAD WARRIORS as they headed south to DeMotte to face the KV Kougars in NCC play. This was a BATTLE!! No one could generate much on the offensive end due to some PHENOMENAL D-D-D-DEFENSE displayed by both teams! KV led 9-6 after 1 ... 16-10 at the break ... 22-17 after 3 ... and hung on in a FURIOUS 4th quarter to win 33-28. Our girls came up just a bit short, but gave a TREMENDOUS EFFORT for 32 minutes!! Asia once again led the charge with 14 points and her sister Amarea chipped in 6.
Saturday afternoon, Hobart welcomed the Calumet Lady Warriors to town for a game that was postponed over Thanksgiving weekend. Asia Donald scored the 1st basket of the game and the Lady Brickies built an early 14-5 lead by the end of the 1st quarter thanks to 10 points from Donald. Over the next 8 minutes, our girls PUT THIS ONE AWAY with some AMAZING D-D-D-DEFENSE and OUTSTANDING transition O-O-O-OFFENSE ... outscoring Calumet 20-0 in the 2nd period with senior Lexi Williams' 9 points leading the way! Hobart would go on to win 58-28!! Asia Donald (22 pts) topped the scoring chart for Hobart once again and was joined in double figures by her sister Amarea (10) and Williams (11).
The Lady Brickies are 4-4 on the year and 0-2 in NCC play. Unfortunately, Tuesday's previously scheduled game @ LaCrosse has been postponed due to a COVID concern within the LaCrosse program ... so our girls will be back in action NEXT SATURDAY @ Andrean. GOOD LUCK LADIES!!
Swimming & Diving
On Tuesday night, the Lady Brickies hosted another NCC double-dual meet ... this time around the competing teams were perennial powerhouse Munster and a repeat from last week, the Lowell Red Devils. The Lady Seahorses were stacked and handed our girls their 1st loss of the season, 124-62. Against the Devils, Hobart again reigned supreme - increasing the margin of victory from a week ago - and sending Lowell home with another "L", 131-41!!
Senior Emma Wright scored VICTORIES in both the 50 & 100-yd Freestyle races and classmate Alivia Ahner earned another VICTORY on the diving board, defeating her closest competitor from Munster by less than a point (173.40-172.50)!!

The Lady Brickies are 3-2 on the season ... 2-1 in NCC action ... and will celebrate SENIOR NIGHT with an intrasquad swim THIS THURSDAY in the Aquatics Center!!
Our boys joined the girls in facing Munster & Lowell on Tuesday night in the HHS Aquatics Center. Once again competing a bit short-handed, the Brickies GOT AFTER IT and swam well!
The phrase DYNAMIC DUO ... usually reserved for DC superheroes Batman & Robin ... applies fittingly to juniors Ethan Ferba & Hayden Maggio as they once again went 1-2 on the diving board where they have pulled the ole' 1-2 in 3 consecutive meets! Ultimately, both the Seahorses & Red Devils left the Friendly City with victories, but our boys are giving a tremendous effort and showing improvement weekly!

After facing one of the best teams in the "219" on Tuesday in Munster, Thursday's competition at Crown Point provided no rest for the weary as the Bulldogs are also a top tier program. One of the best things about this year's boys team is that they have NO FEAR! Sophomore Owen Finch led a trio of Brickies to VICTORY in the 100 Free by finishing in 1st place followed by classmate Noah Bailey and freshman Luke Weinman! The DYNAMIC DUO was at it again on the diving board as Ferba & Maggio went 1-2 over the dogs!! The final score ended up a victory for the Bulldogs, 126-48, but the experience competing against the best will add up to a victory for the Brickies down the road!
Here are results from Thursday's meet:
200 Medley Relay - 3rd
200 Free - 3rd = Herrin
200 IM - 4th = Mamushe
50 Free - 3rd = Weinman
Diving - 1st - Ferba, 2nd = Maggio

The Brickies are 0-5-1 on the season (a scoring error at Knox last week gave the Brickies a tie) and 0-3 in NCC action. A SENIOR NIGHT celebration takes place this Thursday with some intrasquad fun. LET'S GO BRICKS!!
