A Positive School Culture is on Display at OVHS
In Nelle Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Atticus Finch explains to Scout: “First of all, if you can learn a simple trick, Scout, you'll get along a lot better with all kinds of folks. You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view […] until you climb into his skin and walk around in it." This inspirational message sparked the creation of a video that addresses the significance of a positive school climate.
During the 2015-2016 school year, Mrs. Stephanie Kallis, Oley Valley High School English teacher, asked her students if they would like to collaborate and film a video with two segments – the first of people within the high school behaving poorly and the second of people helping one another and attempting to climb into the skin of those around them. The video would also include extraordinary quotes from the literature included in the English I CP and English II CP curricula. Responding enthusiastically, the majority of the students agreed to volunteer their after school time to create the video. All too quickly, the school year ended, and the video remained incomplete.
Because Mrs. Kallis felt strongly about the value of the video, it remained on her mind and she recommitted to the project during the current school year. Once again, the students, some of whom had worked on the project the previous year, chose to participate. A third segment was added to the video. Students asked people who work for and attend schools within the district to provide a five second clip of them dancing. The purpose was simple. Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century, explained it best: “If people never did silly things, nothing intelligent would ever get done.” The participants in the video demonstrated an understanding of the value of creating a school culture in which all people feel accepted and valued. With a remarkable school climate, everyone will enjoy working and learning within the Oley Valley School District.
It is essential to note that a primary goal was to involve as many people as possible from diverse backgrounds to emphasize the importance of inclusion. Thanks to administrators, teachers, staff, and students, this goal was accomplished. Mrs. Kallis also wishes to express sincere appreciation to David Frantz, one of her teacher aides, for providing his technological expertise in the making of this video. He dedicated a great deal of time in its creation. Everyone who contributed hopes the audience enjoys the video. Alyssa Kline, alumnus of Oley Valley High School and current Kutztown University student, expressed after viewing the video: “I really miss Oley Valley.” Yes, that is the school climate everyone should strive to create.

OVHS Students and Faculty Participate in Book Discussion
On April 27 and May 18, students of Mrs. Kallis’s sophomore English classes gathered after school in the high school courtyard to discuss Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie. Apart from the students and snacks, the afterschool courtyard sessions attracted teachers from a variety of disciplines and upperclassmen. Having previously read the novel, school guidance counselors, history teachers, a mathematics teacher, a music teacher, and copious upperclassmen were present to govern student discussion groups and offer their responses to open-ended reading comprehension questions. A primary objective was to have students interact with one another and discuss a terrific book with adults other than English teachers in an effort to demonstrate a love and appreciation of literature outside of the traditional English classroom. The result was one of success and positive feedback.

The Foundation wants to recognize several local businesses that made Education Improvement Tax Credit contributions to OVCEF during the 2016-2017 school year. In exchange for their monetary contributions to the Foundation--which is recognized as an approved Education Improvement organization because it encourages and funds innovative educational programs for Oley Valley students--these businesses received tax credits.
Our 2016-2017 EITC contributors were Tompkins VIST Bank, Solid Waste Services Inc., Weis Markets Inc., East Penn Manufacturing Co., and BB&T.
Thanks to these businesses for supporting the Foundation and our Oley Valley students with their generous contributions!
Annual Stone Auction raises funds for OVCEF
The Ninth Annual Natural Stone Auction took place on Saturday, May 20, on the grounds of Rolling Rock Building Stone, Inc. This event featured the sale of 200 lots of items including various types of landscaping stone, granite building stone, stone benches, tiles, pavers, and antique millstones and troughs.
Despite steady rain on the day of the auction, the Foundation netted a substantial profit from the sale of these items. This event is a major fundraiser for OVCEF; the Foundation’s share of the auction proceeds funds projects and programs that benefit the students of the Oley Valley School District.
The Foundation Board of Trustees wants to thank Eric and Gary Weller of Rolling Rock Building Stone Inc. for hosting the event; the Rolling Rock staff for their efforts in preparing for the event; Frey Auctioneers for donating their time and talents to sell the auction items; and the Oley Fire Company for donating the profits from its food concession at the auction to OVCEF.
