Growth Mindset: an Essential Disposition for Learning
A growth mindset is a term coined by Dr. Carol Dweck of Stanford University. It helps to describe the research and understandings we have about the brain and how people learn. Parents that have a growth mindset believe that their children can learn through effort, perseverance, and resiliency. Intelligence is not a fixed quantity of "smartness" that you are born with. How we praise our children can help support building their sense of a growth mindset. As parents, we know how powerful praising our children can be. Look at the following three examples of growth mindset praise.
Praise to support growth mindset:
"Wow! Your studying really paid off!" This praises the connection between effort and achievement.
Growth mindsets are true in all areas of life:
Hey! All of that practice really made a difference! This praises the connection between perseverance and achievement.
Growth mindset help us learn from disappointments.
I can see that you are unhappy with your performance today. What do you think you can do so that you can be ready for the next time, and play with more confidence? This supports reflection and the idea that failure is an opportunity that can propel us to learn new things.
